I'm just about to place an order for a new Range Rover Sport 3.0 Supercharged Petrol 2017 M/Y for my wife - I know the diesel is very quiet as we've had one on loan but all our cars are petrol and as Land Rover are now offering a 3.0 litre Supercharged version of the R/R Sport, we are leaning towards this, as I'm expecting it to be even quieter.

I don't know if I'm too early to ask this question, as I know this is a relatively new model, but has anyone got one yet and if so, is the engine smooth and quiet as I would expect?

Or do Supercharged engines have a downside?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I've never had a supercharged car before - Does this make progress jerky, or are there any downsides? (not bothered about fuel consumption)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Maybe find an f-pace to try? I suspect it'll be the same experience engine wise.

Good thinking Aeroresh - Do you think it will be the same engine?

I suppose what I'm trying to establish, is will the new 3.0 litre, petrol supercharged car be quieter than the diesel?

One of our oldest cars we own at the moment, is a very rare 2007 MY, 4.4 Vogue petrol, which although 10 years old is so quiet - I just love it.

I have seen videos online of the 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography and the SVR and they seem to have a raspy exhaust note and almost scream when under acceleration, this is not what I want from a Range Rover - I just want the car to be as quiet as possible.

Is this the nature of all Supercharged engines, or is it just because these models have been designed in this way, or because they are being driven hard on these videos?

Any advice would be much appreciated

There is a trend for 'active' exhausts these days. When you put your foot down, a valve is opened and makes the exhaust straight through pretty much. Used on loads of of Jaguars, so would assume is the same for the SVR Land Rover's.

No idea if they'll do this on the 3.0 or not. But I suspect you could stop it doing it if you wanted too.

A Supercharged engine should be smooth and no reason to be noisy. Depending on the supercharger and it's setup it could make a supercharger whine. But I don't know how the RR will be.

Thanks 300bhp/ton and hilly10.... That's the thing though hilly10, that's not what I want from this particular car..... It's tricky as they've only just released this model and no one seems to have one.

Does anyone know, if supercharged cars are driven gently in traffic, should they be quiet, or will I always get this background rumbling noise from the exhaust?

A supercharger won't affect the exhaust note at all. Exhaust noise will be all exhaust related. But the trend is for more 'sporty' models, or sportily performing models to be more audible. I think this largely stems from the loop hole that allows the cars to pass the drive-by noise on a gentle throttle, then be anti socially loud when pressing on.

If you look back at past models, before active exhaust technology was mainstream, all cars, even sporty ones, tended to be fairy quiet. My 4.6 Range Rover is near silent, as was my V12 Jaguar.

Positive Displacement superchargers tend to make a whining noise under load. And maybe increased intake noise. But this should only be with large throttle openings, not trundling round town.

Here is an example of supercharger whine. Obviously a completely different vehicle and I wouldn't expect a factory car to make a noise like this. But it's an example of the kind of noise a supercharger makes.

I have no experience at all but in the Jaguar section I think some people who have driven XFs with this engine were very much in favour - I think one described it as "wafty"

Thanks 300php/ton and oop north - I'm kind of expecting this car to be quiet around town as you both suggest but at £76k after specking, I need to be sure that it's right.

I spoke with the dealership yesterday and they have a demo coming in early January, so I've decided the wise thing to do is to wait to ensure I'm happy with it.

Thanks again

Definately try before you buy.

I went on a drive day with the F-Pace fitted with the 3.0 S/C, compared to my Porsche with a turbo'd 3.0 V6, it was quite raspy and tinny sounding and needed to be revv'd..much prefer the smooth SDV6 on a big SUV....or get the 5.0 V8!

That's really good to know triple7 thanks for that..... That's exactly what we're keen to avoid. Will definitely be waiting for a test drive now.
