The new defender wouldn't even be made if it wasn't for the 'pretty toys' as you call them. You'll probably be quite upset when you find out that the new Defender will be basded oin the the D4 platform? Is that a pretty toy? LR have to evolve and that means cars will become more complex and hybrids will become the norm. Do people serioulsy think they could survive juyst selling a 90 that can carry two sheep in it and be hosed down afterwards. I am of the opinion that these farmers jumped ship years ago to jap pick ups because they wanted something called comfort and a heater that worked.
I also think that the last few years of Defender production have been sold to people who will never take them off road! LR swallowed quite a few for 70th V8 edition!
Edit: I haven't watched the broadcast and I'm not going to. What I have heard is that the new defender was shown to dealers at a recent event in Portugal. Weather thats true or not I don't know. Bu my guess if we haven't seen the new Defender unveiled at a motorshow by the end of the year it aint happening till 2019.
I'm guessing the Defender unveiling will be the biggest vehicle launch we have seen from Land Rover and the motoring world will be watching. If I'm in the right place, I will watch it live

I have no problem with the pretty toys, I am aware that companies have to make money anf they know what sells.
What I don't like is the complete lack of imagination in the design team. If you park one of each of the range from 1990, a Classic Range Rover, a 200tdi Discovery and a Ninety or One Ten, you can see that they are all from the same family but yet they are all also completely individual despite being almost exactly the same underneath. If you did the same with the Range from 2018 you would struggle to tell one from the other. They have drifted from family identity to photocopies set larger or smaller and calling it designing
