63 plate onward Range and RRS reliability - is this normal?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm on my second Range Rover, and was keen to understand if my ownership experience is mirrored by others or if I am just unlucky. I am specifically keen to learn more with regard to 2012/2013 models onward.
I bought a used Range Rover from Guy Salmon in November 2016, my first 4 x 4. Really enjoyed the car in general (it's the longest I've kept one!) BUT for the numerous niggles. I kept it for 16 months, during which I had the following trips to the dealer;
Nov 16 - Mar 18
Range Rover (63 plate, 26k miles on purchase and doing circa 8-9k miles p/annum under my ownership)
Brake squeal - cleaned brakes, didn't fix
Brake squeal and sidesteps not deploying - said they replaced brakes, but still didn't fix
Brake squeal - replaced brakes which fixed it
Sidesteps not deploying
Gearbox warning light - gearbox update which should have been done last service but wasn't.
Burning smell - LR assist, couldn't find fault so booked in.
Burning smell - oil leak from turbo, booked in for turbo drain modification
Turbo drain modification
So 7 trips to the dealer with 1 extra booked, and 1 LR assist visit before I sold it in March....I won't include the key totally falling apart and needing replacing before sale.
I thought let's get into something a bit newer and try a Range Rover Sport
23 Mar 18 - current
Range Rover sport (66 plate, 14.5k miles on purchase now on 15.5k)
Airbag warning light 2 days into ownership - Land Rover Assist. Found lose connection
Brake squeal and dashboard rattle - diagnosed
Brakes replaced, investigative work into dashboard not carried out but theory an air con pipe has come loose. Plus airbag warning light on again, another lose connection needs investigation and seats stripping
Booked back in for investigative work but booking for 2 months time! Earliest availability
So 3 trips to the dealer with 1 follow on booked and 1 LR assist visit
Total ownership experience from 18 months involves;
12 x visits to the service department
2 x LR assist call outs
Is this simply bad luck, or is this typical of ownership?

I know of someone who purchased New a 2012 Range Rover the brake squeal began at less than a thousand miles.
It went in to the dealer to be put on the ramps
Having collected the car a day or so later they were told all was well.
Drove it a mile down the road and the brake squeal came back
They drove back to the dealer who then said they'd look at it again
Few days later the car was ready
Drove it a mile, squeal came back.. Back at the dealer they were told there was nothing majorly wrong with car so just turn the radio up.. This problem was solved on the driveway with some copper grease

Thanks all, appreciate the feedback.
I was warned before buying one that I should expect it to be high maintenance! The thing is they are so good when working that you almost try to look beyond it.
Think I will get the issues fixed then move it on and hop into something which breaks less

Reviews would say it's pretty typical.
My LR ownership was a similar ordeal albeit in a defender I kept it to long thinking it had to so breaking down at some point, it never did.
Yeah, for some reason despite having one that broke a lot I decided to get another thinking it'd be fine! Oops. My LR ownership was a similar ordeal albeit in a defender I kept it to long thinking it had to so breaking down at some point, it never did.
Just to update this thread in case anyone else is searching and it's of use.....
After my "diagnosis" appointment in May my car was booked into Range Rover in July for them to fix the annoying rattle and airbag warning light.
It was meant to take 2 days, I am now heading into week 4.
Updates are quite hard to come by, as you have to call 4-5 times and leave 4-5 messages in order to get anyone to call you back.
Having lost patience and emailed the MD and Head of Customer Experience (who in fairness replied VERY quickly, was very apologetic, and also upgraded my Discovery Sport courtesy car for a well specced Velar demonstrator), I am now down to only having to leave 2 messages to get anyone to call back. So that's a big improvement.
The delays have been numerous - needing to order parts (why, the car was diagnosed in May?), road testing to find the fault (why, the fault was diagnosed in May), etc.
Most recently, having thought they'd fixed the rattle they started the car from cold and realised it wasn't fixed. As such they've done another repair and needed to let the car cool down before starting it to see if it's gone. So they kept it this weekend in order to test it Monday. As of 1.30pm today noone has started the car yet, so no idea if it's fixed yet.
It's been quite an experience, when I collect it I am heading straight to my local independent car dealer to get photos done and put it on SOR with a view of selling it at not too much of a loss hopefully.
Oh and they found during some of their "testing" that the brakes still squeal so put new ones on again. Which is nice for whoever buys it next!
I do hope they contact me for an after service survey this time around

September 2015 (MY16) SDV6 AB owner here. It's just about to tick over 30k miles and touch wood I've had no problems in that time. I do think I might be in the minority though and it's luck of the draw. There does appear to be a lot of horror stories, particularly with very early cars and MY17 cars.
My warranty will be expiring soon, and the 'crank' problem is a real worry, as it's a new engine required!. I've read stories about the 'extended' warranties not covering the problem, so unless I have it in writing that it's covered, I'll be moving on to something else.
It's a real shame the JLR quality control is so poor, because I think the L494 is such a good car.

Good to hear from some people who have had trouble free ownership. They are such good vehicles when they are working! Honestly speaking if nothing had gone wrong with either of mine, I'd see no reason to get anything else. I assumed everyone had the same issues as me hence the 2-3 months waiting time for an appointment haha.
I am likely to get into a facelift (not current gen, a 14/15 plate) Panamera Turbo or a 16/66 Cayenne and whilst they're both great vehicles, I know there are aspects I prefer about the Range and Range Sport. I just can't cope with the trip to the service department every 5-6 weeks as it has been for me.
Just to make a more compelling case to not change my mind, I received my car back with a chunk of leather taken out of one of the seats. It's going back in next week for them to assess how to fix it, and then back after that again for them to do the work. Damn.

and that's how Land Rover are still in business!!I have a 05 D3 which I bought with 169k on the clock and its now two years on with 185k on the clock and its cost considerably more than the 208k Saab that it replaced!
What what I will eventually replace the D3 with? Probably a D4
