Range Rover Sport - Really as unreliable as the rumours?

I've had my BMW 640d gran coupe for almost 4 years and it's time for a change. There's nothing our there that I like or impresses me as much as my current car for my low £20k's budget. The circa 2016 Range Rover Sport does however stand out. I am however concerned that everyone tells me they break down and cost a fortune to keep running and they keep getting stolen so insurance is through the roof, etc, etc. Is it all true? What are people's genuine experiences? Thanks

From my perspective, on my 3rd from new since 2015 - 1st a 3.0D HSE Dynamic for 3.5 years and 45k miles, second another 3.0D HSE Dynamic and 30k miles, and now a SVR for the last 2 years and 20k miles.
Only issue encountered - the first one had a set of squeaky/noisy brake pads that were replaced under warranty.

The short answer to your question is no, they are no where near as unreliable as their reputation suggests. Naturally the internet blows such issues completely out of proportion. They're obviously big, heavy, complicated machines - of course things go wrong from time to time. Sometimes minor, sometimes major...but this is the same with most brands!
My own personal experience. I owned a 2016 RRS when it was 2 years old for 4 years, and it was the best and most reliable car I'd owned to date! The only issue I had was a slight rattle when you closed the rear door and at high speed...turned out to be a loose bolt on the rear spoiler - sorted under warranty.
I've owned 6 JLR cars over the years and never had any issues beyond that and a wheel bearing in an X-Type. Maybe I've been lucky...but I think they're all fantastic things and would highly recommend them to anyone.

I've had my RRS P400e for 3 years, and I have really enjoyed it. I have had a squeaky bit of interior trim and the windscreen wiper controller replaced in that time under warranty, so I would rate reliability as good for my car. But I appreciate that I might have been lucky.
The big problem is insurance costs. You need to get some quotes before you commit to a Range Rover of any kind.
