Disco 3 2.7 TDV6 OR disco 4 3.0 3.0 SD V6 XS CommandShift
Discussion
I've been to look at both and they are in great condition both 2 previous owners both 170k miles full service history and timing change done.
What would you buy? I have three kids under 8 we go up to the lakes to my in-laws a lot but that's the majority of the needs not towing etc. What would you buy? What would you look out for? (rust underneath obviously)
The Disco 3 is 2008 and the 4 is 2011 - they are both the same price.
Any help greatly appreciated. Natalie

D4 every time. It’s faster and they fixed all the rubbish bits of the D3. It’s just a better car and I’ve owned both for 7 & 10 years respectively.
Check for regular engine oil changes and a gearbox flush, preferably every 70k miles. If not, get it done. Lower suspension arms at the front also need changing at 100k miles. If going for the D4, ask if the intake manifolds have been changed. They are plastic as split, not expensive parts but the labour is.

An SMax. (And I did...)You've got to really want a Disco to put up with them. They need regular maintenance and there are some potential issues that are very expensive to sort.

You won’t find a more practical family car than a Disco, it’s why I still have mine after a decade of constant use. They are brilliant and both my D3 and D4 were totally reliable. However, they do need to be properly maintained.
More leg room in an SMax with the same boot footprint (and the SMax seats slide so the boot is longer at the expense of rear legroom.) and the seats are evenly split. It's easier to get car play/android auto, and they cost less to run and maintain. The D4 wins on comfort and desirability though. ETA plus the boot is taller.
No one wants an SMax unlike a Disco, but you need to go into the ownership experience with your eyes wide open.

Thanks so much guys. The D4 has my heart so I’ve asked all those questions. I currently have a Peugeot 5008 GT. it fits the kids in has leather heated massage seats and all the bells and whistles but I don’t love it and know I’ll need to replace cam belt this year so instead of staying in a monthly payment I just want to buy outright. Terrified the engine will fail in 2 months but I guess that’s the risk you take!
I’ve asked all the questions put forward and if the work has been done if it has I’ll go for it, if not I may consider saving a load of cash with an s max!

Good choice. They are very lovable things and the reason I’ve kept mine so long is I cannot think what to replace it with. I’ve just shelled out a fortune so it now has Apple CarPlay and future proof for a good few years!I’ve asked all the questions put forward and if the work has been done if it has I’ll go for it, if not I may consider saving a load of cash with an s max!
If you get a good one and look after it, it’ll be fine. Done worry about the engine, for every one that’s gone wrong, there’s 1000 that didn’t. Let us know how you get on

I would go for a D4.
But.
A 2012 onwards with the 8 speed gearbox, it’s a decent improvement over the 6 speed model.
They aren’t cheap to run though. So some research and be fussy on them.
Check mot history of any potential car and ask for service history etc.
You’ll want to see the belts have been done, also front lower arms will likely have been done. Maybe rear upper arms.
Also depending on wheel size, the proper Pirelli tyres aren’t cheap. The previous owner of mine paid £800 for the 20” ones 7 weeks before I bought it.
I’ve ran a D3 for 8 years and now have a 2016 D4.
It’s lovely and I fully recommend one but buy carefully, there’s a lot of polished up stuff that have been run on a shoe string.
You want a full history showing it’s been cared for and not neglected.

Agreed. Title says it’s an SDV6 which means 8 speed (rotary gear selector, instead of a stick). Mine has 19” wheels and it rides well with enough sidewall to avoid curbing. But.

Could be 2011/61 which will be the 8 speed.
Interesting comments on the gearboxes.
I've had D3 6 speed, RRS 2011/61 (3L diesel) 8 speed and now own a D4 6 speed and a RRS 5L S/C 2011/61 (6 speed facelift - V8 didnt come with the 8 speed) and find the 6 speed by far the best.
All the above were in good condition and serviced, but always found the 8speed in the wrong gear and would take an age to drop a gear (or two!) if you wanted to overtake.
