2.4 Defender output shaft failure?
Discussion
I've lost drive from my 2.4 Defender and it may well be the output shaft? Basically if you run the engine there is a rattling noise from the transmission which goes completely silent when you depress the clutch. Has anyone had this work done and what sort of costs might I be looking at? Leek transmissions has been recommended as a possible garage to fix the issue.
Its a very common failure point and I replaced a lot of them when used to work for Land Rover. Its a pretty straight forward job but heavy work removing transfer case and exhaust etc. I'd estimate 5-6 hours labour would be an appropriate quote plus parts.
I think Ashcroft do an upgraded part, I don't know if Land Rover ever modified the part to solve the issue completely but they used to have a parts kit with some special grease for the splines.
The issue is caused because the 6 speed gearbox was modified to accept the age old LT230 transfer case and the splines in the cup for the output shaft strip to the adaptor shaft that drives the transfer box.

This what you need:

I think Ashcroft can even do the repair if they are near you

LOF also do an updated part, which is what my indie suggested for mine when we talked about changing it before it fails (had it happen on one of my other ones at about 30k miles).
Haven’t yet decided whether to go with that or the Ashcroft one (which they’ve never fitted before but would be happy to).
Both of the designs are very different in the way they aim to solve the problem which is making choosing difficult.
