You're right. soft top defenders havent been available for a while. Dont think the TD5 has ever been sold with one so the latest was probably 1998 (last 300tdi).

You could get a truck cab version, remove it and get a soft top retro fitted. not too hard.

hope this helps

Or you can convert it yourself.

If you really want to that is. What are you looking for?

a fun landrover with vaguely acceptable road manners to go 2 miles to the station every day. Really prefer a tilt (or the option of one - hardtop for the winter, tilt for the summer).

I assume that converting it yourself involves drilling out a pile of spotwelds?

It depends what type of hood / frame you want.
If you want a hard top for the winter buy a hard top 90 to start with.
There are a few options for the soft top conversion.

1) First would be a standard hood and frame from someone like www.exmoortrim.co.uk £295 for the frame £180 - £460 for the hood depending on the type.

2) Or go for a NAS/SV style cage which doubles as the hood frame from some one like www.protectionandperformance.co.uk/ or www.northoffroad.co.uk/products.asp I think safety devices did the origonal cage for the NAS/SV's.

with both options you will need to get a tailgate of some sort, either drop down or modify a door to half height.

The standard hoods will need the body loops to lash the hood to aswell, but the more expensive hoods should come with press stud style fastners so this wont be a problem.

You will also need some type of roll bar for the standard type hood frame to mount the top of the seat belts.

there may be other issues if the rear bulk head has been removed to, you could always give someone like www.frogsisland4x4.com/vehicle_prep/vehicle_preparation_nas_soft.htm a bell and see whats involved.

sounds like it's going to be far easier to buy an old 2a.... maybe one that has had its drivetrain sympathetically modded (V8, permanent 4WD, disc brakes)

Nene Overland do a "Bikini" soft top conversion which looks pretty nice.
