Just bought a Disco
Discussion
A very underated car. I sold my Defender in Jan 06 and bought a 51 plate Td5 GS with only 20,000 miles on clock. It did break down the day after I had it on the M40 (lost turbo boost on the outside lane due to the fact that the pipe had not been fastened properly when it was prepared), but after that, it has not missed a beat since (and after 22,000 additional miles). The best car I have owned (so far) and (almost) as good off road as the Defender was (and that had MT tyres). Great on the motorway and perfect at the weekends when it does see use on the muddy stuff.
Slight gripes - The TD5 engine is not the best for pulling away at a busy junction. Common problem, but the revs often dip which can cause a few nervous moments when traffic is bearing down on you. On earlier Disco 2 you may also get the water in fuel light coming on as well. checked this out with the local specialist and it is a common problem - nothing more than a dodgy sensor - ignore it.
My advice, look at having a engine re-map. The Disco will never be a performance car, but this will transform the mid range and low down pulling power. My mate has had his Disco done and the difference to my stock car is huge. Should cost you around £500 for a proper job.
There is an article in this month's LR Monthly which provides a buying guide to the Disco 2. Know that yours is already on the way, but it might be useful when you check over within the warranty period. Hope that you enjoy your new Disco as much as I have enjoyed mine.
