I have a 200TDi Disco (1991) and whilst off-roading recently, reverse gear suddenly failed. There was no banging or crashing, it just silently stopped working!!! It seems to go into gear (ie no restriction on gearstick movement) but there's no drive. All the forward gears work OK. Any ideas please?

Well, seeing as no one else will help, ill add my 2p.
First drain it an see if there is any shrapnel in the bottom, if not id assume the gear box is ok.
This would leave the selectors, the only problem ive seen with these was on a 3.5 rangie transferbox. There was a grub screw holding the selector fork to the shaft that had come lose, the selector shaft simple slid back and forward through the selector fork not moving the gears! it may be a similar design on the reverse gear selector, but ive never seen one so cant say for sure.

Sorry I hadn't seen this post before(or I ignored you ) I lost my gearbox when the reverse gear selector pad fell off the selector arm eek this has been updated by landrover to a larger pad. As it's a disco you have checked the bias spring this are prone to breakage but i'm not sure it would give your symptoms.

Thanks for that - it's a bugger, isn't it?! It was great fun off-road, having to drive forwards out of every situation where I was stuck (instead of reversing out)! I think it's time for an investigation. I'm hoping I can see something from the top without having to take the gearbox out!
