Hi - my discovery has a really annoying intermittent misfire. It (seemingly randomly) will completely lose power but only for a moment. It never stalls but sometimes hiccups twice in quick succession. When not mis-behaving in this way it runs very satisfactorily.

Additional info is that from cold it struggles on initial throttle (again never stalls)and it recently ran really low on fuel (nothing showing on gauge). Also it seems that if it's left for a couple of days un-used it runs well for a good ten miles, but once used, it seems to suffer on each subsequent journey. Oh, also I'm not 100% certain, but it mostly seems to occur on acceleration.

Hope this is not too hard to fix - it's a great car, I can see why that V8 is used in so many sports cars!

Cheers and thanks in advance

Just thinking out loud here, but have you considered that when you ran it so low on fuel that you may have sucked up sediment from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter, that intermittently causes a lean misfire?

Hi Trooper - yes, that was my first thought.. however I have spoken to a few LR places who are saying it might be a sensor (TPS, MAF, etc) or even the immobiliser 'spider' and that the only way to diagnose is to check everything. (££££!) I guess I was after a 'sanity check' on the filter idea. I reckon it's worth changing the filter first as it's a service item anyway.

Cheers.

You could try the ignition amplifier. From memory it's tucked up by the radiator on the same side as the power steering resevoir. They're not overly expensive and can make a big difference to clean running.

The MAF sensor on my 4.0 liter went out and didn't cause any misfires, so you might be able to rule that out as an issue.

Is the "Service Engine Soon" light on? If it was a sensor you would more than likley have a light.

I had similar symptoms with my last 3.9 Classic and a change of ignition leads solved the problem. If theyre original, theyre on their way out! A good service of the ignition system may be in order.

Hi - there's no CEL or service light illuminated - in fact apart from the hiccups, there's no sign of anything wrong. When running normally seems to have good power, pulls smooth and strong.

I will start with the fuel filter then ignition. Also notice that the leads look elderly, so I guess a set of magnacors is on the cards somewhen. Ign amp, then TPS and MAF I guess.....

More suggestions welcome though - this was my 1st post here and the response so far is great. Thanks!

Hi - my Discovery is back in fine health again, so I thought it might benefit others if I posted with the cure.....

Ignition leads!

The lead set was in such a bad state that there was arcing under the bonnet when running - must have looked good in the dark! I had noticed that the lead from the coil to the distributor was not the same as the others, so I guess that there have been probs before.

The new leads are 8mm silicone but I can't see the brand. I guess I may go for the Magnacor ones that I hear recommended when this lot eventually fail.

I should also mention that the dealer I bought from was absoutely amazing and fixed this first hit, all covered under the 3 month warranty that he gave me when I bought the car. If anyone is in the Hants/Berks/Surrey area and wants to know his details, please PM me and I will be happy to pass the info on.

Cheers
