I have just acquired a 1998 Landrover Discovery tdi, can any one please explain how the off road gears are used for driving in off road conditions or in slippery icy/snowing conditions.

Generally as follows:

A High ratio, centre difflock disengaged - all hard surface driving

B High ratio, centre difflock engaged - rough tracks, grass, snow and ice. Use the highest gear possible and with gentle throttle modulation to avoid wheelspin

C Low ratio, centre difflock disengaged - low speed manoevering with a trailer or any situation where you are on a high-traction surface but require maximum torque at low ground speeds. Use the highest gear possible and with gentle throttle modulation to avoid wheelspin

D Low ratio, centre difflock engaged - low speed manoevering on low-traction surfaces or very heavy towing. Use the highest gear possible and with gentle throttle modulation to avoid wheelspin

Hope this helps...
