I was advised to steer clear of the Td's when I was looking and to hold out for an early Tdi. Ended up with a V8 with Lpg but that is by the by. Even one of the garages I visited told me that they don't even take Td's in as a trade in because of the problems, they are obliged by this 3 month statutory warranty thing if they try to sell them on so not worth their while even getting involved. The n/a diesels were fine but slow I gather.

I think you meant to say everyone recommends the 200 / 300Tdi engine as it's better than the earlier 2.5TD but less complex than the later Td5 engine.
Regarding the original post; the 2.5TD is generally regarded as the least reliable of the lot but having said that you ought to be buying a TD considerably cheaper than a Tdi engined vehicle so it depends how much you're spending. A decent second hand Defender Tdi engine alone (Disco has different turbo position) can easily cost you £1,500.00
My 1987 90 TD (bought last year for £500) now has 144k on the clock and is running well (touch wood) and it does what I want it to do - there's no chance I could have bought a 90 Tdi for that money but given the option I would like a Tdi in it!
There you go, clear as mud.
