The sun was one driving to work this morning and I opened the sunroof for the first time this winter. When I went to shut it, there was a sound like cog teeth failing to bite, and it won't shut the last inch. Luckily it's parked in a garage today, but I'd like to close it before the drive home tonight (rain forecast!)

Its a 2003 2.5 ES model. Does anyone know if you can shut the roof manually? And if the cogs are shot, is that still be a problem?

Can you work out where the motor is?
I suspect, when revealed, you will find a shaft end which you can put a screwdriver into.

Prized out the light pod. Motor was underneath with shaft end. Screwdriver closed it. Cheers thumbup

OMG! The exact same thing happened on our Freelander - funnily enough a 2003 2.5 ES!

Exact same sound. LR repaired it under warranty, but its now broken again, with the same problem.

It happened when the sunroof was all the way open, and when it was just in the "pop-up" position.

If its popped up, give it a helping hand, but pushing down firmly as someone else flicks the "close" switch, but don't hit it.

Similarly, give it a helping hand if its in the fully open position. Lay your hand flat on the outside on the sunroof, then firmly push forward, as the someone else is pushing the "close" switch. It worked for me!

Common problem this, caused when the teeth on the runners strip and cannot be driven by the motor gear. You might try to brow beat the dealer to repair it under warranty, as the fault is NOT wear and tear.
If you are local to the midlands I can give you the name of a good sunroof specialist!
