Range Rover Classic Problem...Help!
Discussion
Hello All
MOT time for the Clasic mean't that it was time for a new steering box, so I set aside the weekend and got down to it. Finally finished it feeling really proud of myself.
Got in the car to start it and nothing, lights on the dash, but nothing else. Cut a long story short, after much investigation it turns out its stuck in gear (its an auto) so the inhibitor switch is stopping all progress. Short term fix to move the damned thing on the drive I whipped the proprshafts off.
Turns out my 3 yerar old son had been inside it 'playing at driving' and moving the auto shift selector up and down the gate. The linkage under the car seems to be moving in line with the shifter position, but she's stubbornly stuck in gear. I've had wheels off and rocked it but nothing.
Anyone seen this before (BLUESPANNER!!!!) and got any idea how to fix it?
Thanks in advance

If you now have the shafts off have you tried starting it by bypassing the the start inhibit switch?
Once it is running and fluid is pumping in the 'box it may free itself up. Once you have bypassed the switch I would pull the king lead from the dizzy so you can at least find if it turns over cleanly without something jammed in the box.

Edit another thought, in your nippers game did he also play low ratio diff lock?

From underneath there is a multiplug in a wire running fore and aft just above the gear linkage on the nearside. Unplug it and look at the wire colours on the rearmost cable. If the car is post 1986 you are looking for White/Red and a Black/orange which you need to connect together with a piece of wire thinner than the identified wires. If it is pre 86 then it looks like the Black/Green wire needs to be earthed.
Pre 86 the switch also does the reverse light which is why you need to find the right wires.
If you have a multimeter you could test the wires.
Pre 86
The green wire will go live with ignition on.
The Black/green will go live with the start position.
Post 86
The White/Red will go live with the start position.
