anyone stuck a 2.5 N/A diesel in a series 3?
Discussion
right - diesel conversion time -
much as I'd like a tdi 200 squeezed they're too much money for too worn an engine
so -- what about the land rover 2.5 N/A diesel -- what mods / chops will it need to fit into the S3?
btw -- i currently have a 2.25 petrol
anyone done this conversion before??
anyone got a decent engine for sale?
cheers

Hi,
Ive done this a few times, you can use the 2.5 na engine but you will have to change the front cover for one off a Sherpa.
The land rover front cover fouls the chassis and prevents the engine sitting down on the engine mount.
There are some other subtle differences between the engines but it should fit without to much grief.
Cheers Roy

The Sherpa engine you require would be from a 400 series from about 1984 up to 1989.
After that time LDV changed to the Peugeot 2.5 diesel following an interruption in supply due to a strike at Land Rover.
If I remember correctly you may need to change the exhaust manifold as it exits in the wrong place for the Chassis on the Land Rover.
Otherwise everything is pretty straightforward.
I used to trawl the Trader for ex military spares, there wer allways loads of engine available from these sources.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Roy

Some Aussie late series 3 were fitted with an Isuzu dieso which turned these into a very reliable machine specially if a snorkel was fitted u could take your landy swimming and the engine didnt stop, funny that! my 2.25 doesnt like being washed let alone a swim, worth looking into, look into a company in Australia called Dellow Automotive in Sydney, they do conversion kits bet they can solve your drama with a kit probably cheaper then what u would get one in the UK for, u could soon have a dieso imported or find one locally, worth a look.
