I know i should spend money, but the old girl(95 HSE) has done 138k and is worth, well not a lot. The whine is getting worse, i have changed the oil. Can i put in a miracle oil ? I had to run on the old 16 one side and it virtually went. I only use it for carting radios around doing maybe 10 miles a day, so no high speed motorway work.

Hi David, sounds like you desperately need a replacement diff.
I would urge you to be very careful, as I have known these to destroy themselves with catastrophic results.
I would advise looking around for a good used diff assembly asap.
There are quite a few breakers around so do a bit of searching and you should get one for around £150.
Cheers
Roy

I am pretty sure I have a diff if you need one. I have a selection of Disco2 ones and I am 99% sure they are the same......

As already said driving round with one that is failing can cause more problems. Scrap axle casings are quite common.

Pete.

Thanks for the info. The whine is very differcult to locate, i only say its the front because when i run with 161n on one side and 18in on the other the whine almost goes. Is there a real test other than taking it somewhere ? I may take you up on the diff then !

The front diff should be ok at that mileage so are you sure its not a wheel bearing as its a common failure especially at that mileage if its on the originals. Should be able to jack up one wheel at a time and spin it as fast as you can by hand and listen for bearing whine. Good luck.
