Just need confirmation really. Gave the old girl a 600 mile thrash on Tuesday and it appears to have done it no favours.

Now smokes heavily (black) on acceleration.

I reckon the injector pump is Donald Ducked, but can anything be adjusted out?

Try changing the oil and filters first, if they haven`t been changed for a while they could be partially blocked.
Check that the intercooler is clean and that the hoses haven`t delaminated causing a blockage.
Also try putting an injector cleaner in the tank as you could have picked up some dirty fuel.

Remember that black smoke is power smoke so it does not neccessarily mean that the injector pump is fuggered.

It's probably a combination of your pump and your injectors. On 200tdi's they seem to wear out at about the same time. There's a guy in Boston who can rebuild your pump and re-calibrate it if want his number drop me a PM he also rebuilds injectors but it works out the same as buying new ones. He does do cash jobs as well wink.

Thanks Matt. May be quicker and cheaper to get some from a breakers. Also the old bus isdue a mot this month so I may well put it through to see what else needs doing before I go chucking money at it.
No way that the pump can be wound back a bit I suppose?

IMO it's not worth trying to wind the pump back. The seals inside are normally that worn that an over haul/replacement is the only answer. I'd steer clear of second hand stuff unless it has some sort of guarantee.

When the injector pump goes south they generally wont run. Try removing/changing the air filter. If it fails the MOT on smoke, then put a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel filter and run it through, that should give it a good clean out.
If it passes, why worry unless it is so bad that you are causing danger to other road users with a smoke screen?
Does it smoke on light acceleration or just foot to floor?

BTW: Paddock Spares supply a complete filter kit cheaper than you can buy an air filter from a Motor Factors. Make sure you get the correct air filter as there are two different types for the TDi200.

Well the problem seems to have cured itself. I an no longer see a cloud of black smoke in my rear view mirror. The mirror fell off last week.

check your turbo hoses, they delaminate inside & restrict the airflow.

Just a thought, I have just changed the cam belt on mine and got the injector pump 1 tooth out when I put it all back together. The result was a slight misfire when the revs picked up and clouds of smoke although it was bluey white so it was chucking unburnt diesel down the exhaust, this is when cold and as soon as the engine warms it clears. I have retimed it today and it seems OK now.
Could it be the cam belt is on the way out on yours although I would assume it would have gone by now.
