A cunning plan ?…110 Defender
Discussion
In the New Year I should, if everything goes to plan, be moving to London and setting up as a plumber / kitchen fitter / carpenter. The obvious thing to do would be to go out and buy a ropey SWB white van, preferably one with an old copy of the Sun and “also available in white” written on the back. But that would be too easy…
Instead I have been thinking about an 80s, early 90s 110 Defender. I would take out the back and middle seats, which should give enough space inside for tools. Fit a rack on top for a ladder, copper pipes and anything really big I might need to carry.
I would only be driving round South and Central London most of the time, so not long distances. I have driven landies before and liked the "basic" ride but have only done this in the countryside - no town driving.
So my question is would I find it a pain to drive, park and use in a big city ?

Congestion charge is I think it needs to be registered as having 10+ seats and you can then classify it as a bus or something with Red Ken just by filling in a form. Problem is that for that you need a 5 door Station Wagon which are usually considerably more to buy than commercial defenders, if you are ripping the seats out anyway then you might as well just get a commercial 110 and save yourself the money.
Other than that I wholeheartedly commend the idea

why would he want yours? no one wants to have replace the suspension all down one side as soon as they get a vehicle.

I think red ken is setting up a scheme where any older commercial vechile driving into london is going to be whacked with a huge daily congestion charge type taxInstead I have been thinking about an 80s, early 90s 110 Defender. It applys to (ALL) diesels built before 2001.
bugger. So rip out the engine and stick a 5.7l V8 ?I still think a 110 will be my best bet and have already been looking at how to make it overland friendly (London to CapeTown) for when it is not trundling round the big smoke.
