Whats gone wrong with your Disco 2 Td5 and how much to fix?
Discussion
Odd question I know. I'm after an '04 plate Disco 2, but it'll be my first 'proper' car and i'm a bit concerned that it has the potential to break me if it goes wrong! I've looked into aftermarket warranties (eg warranty direct) and your answers should help me judge if its worth it or not.
I have an '02 Td5 ES. What's gone wrong?
The two most "serious" things;
- Both front window regulators broke (both with the windows in the fully down position, one as we were about to leave for a 2 week holiday on the West Coast of Scotland).
- We parked on a steep hill in Scotland overnight, and on restarting, it wouldn't engage gear (it's an auto). I'm told that the oil runs down inside the gearbox, so there's no oil pressure and the 'box won't work as a result. Fortunately we were able to roll down the hill to a flat spot, at which point it was fine. It's never done it again. Personally, I think this is pretty crap for an off-road vehicle.
And some trivia;
- The NSR door central locking has packed up, so we can't unlock the door. (To be sorted out next week.)
- Twice now (we've had the car two years) on starting the car, the gearbox failure warning has come up, goes away on restarting.
- The ACE failure warning light sometimes comes on after towing the trailer a long way (>200 miles). Goes away on restarting.
Despite what you might think, it's been a superb car, and I'd cheerfully have another.

Well don't get me wrong, I'm not of the opinion that they break down at every turn! TBH i don't perceive them as being any worse than any other car out there. The trouble with internet 'reviews' by Joe Public is that they are usually only moved to write when things go wrong, so you cant go off those opinions. I was just trying to gauge whether or not aftermarkey warranties are worthwile, but I suspect I will make that the subject of another post for maximum impact! Any thoughts welcom here though..
When I read about peoples list of problems there will in these days be a higher proportion of electronic related issues which either go away on restarting or after removing and re-applying power.
'Removing and re-applying power'. Now there's an interesting thought. How many times do you need to do that on a LR compared to the number of times I have to reboot this damn PC?

ABS sensors play up on the odd day - dash lights up and you get a few warning 'bings'; but goes away after a couple of miles and ABS works fine.
Power steering pump went, but easy to replace and not expensive.
Basically, find a local specialist to fix things that go wrong, and a stealer for standard servicing if you want to keep the 'dealer service history'.
Apart from that - superb car that I use for lugging stuff around and can sit for 2 weeks without being used and starts first time every time. :touchwood:!
ETA: it won't fit in most non-modern car parks as it needs 2m clearance! Most new'ish car parks are ok though.
