285 Section Tyres on Defender
Discussion
Hi guys, just fitted these to my Defender........what a world of differnce they make. They are 18" versions of the Boost alloy with 285 Hankook tyres on them. The ride and stability is greatly improved with all the extra power going through them!
I have fitted an uprated steering damper to try and stop teh dreaded wheel shimmy but it is still there ever so slightly, any ideas of what else I can do to prevent it happening. And by the way if anyone asks they do not rub on any part of the vehicle, even on full lock! A god idea for anyone who uses their Defender on road for the majority of the time.

That is one nice Defender.I like those tyres.Whats the cost per corner??.They do look road biased though.Going back to your Defender, whats the full spec on it.Ive noticed from your profile, that you have a bi-xenon light conversion.Ive also got xenons fitted to mine, but mine seem to interfere with the alarm system.

Hi Bluethunder..........very jealous of yoru 50th!
Full spec on mice is JE Engineering Stage 2 re-map that has been personalised by TD5 Alive to give even more power and more impotantly driveability. I have a Full size intercooler and pipes, EGR by-pass valve, ITG air filter and a booster box so she is now running at 20psi! I have had a GKN overdirve for a year now and it is just the best bit of kit on the car! Last but not least the Twisted Performance exhaust that makes a hell of a racket!
The zenon light on mine are fine and have not upset the alarm system at all. Inside I have a serious stereo install by Auto Audion in London who have made it nearly invisble to keep looking standard.
I can get those wheels for £1250 balanced, delivered and including VAT. The tyres are the expensive part! They are quiet road biased but seem to perform pretty well on the slippy stuff.
Cheers
Mike

Thats an impressive spec.Twisted performance seem to be one of the leaders now in diesel upgrades for Defenders.Nice number plate as well. When i bought mine, there was an Overfinch 5.0ltr 50th on offer.I didnt notice any considerable difference in performance over mine in town driving. But once on the open road the performance was staggering. It was only hampered by the low gearing in the diffs. But i couldnt justify the extra £4600 over mine to purchase it.Which for a 98 is immaculate.
If you are looking for a wheel and tyre deal try www.ajstyres.co.uk, Landrover service and repair too.
Bish, have you done anything to the suspension?
I had 285/60R18 Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on my Td5 90 along with the full JEE engine tuning and suspension upgrades (shorter springs, Koni dampers, and anti-roll bars front and rear). Even running on BFG ATs - there were no decent looking 18" alloys at the time the conversion was done - the handling was superb; not just more grip on corners but the ride was transformed. Things did improve with the Zero's but I reckon that the suspension enhancements gave a bigger improvement than the tyres did.
Also had JE fit the Discovery transfer box gearing - so much less hassle than an overdrive!
I never had any problems with wheel shimmying in 6 years. But I understand it is caused by the hubs not being set up properly, something to do with preload, whatever that is. Should be cured by any competent LR specialist.

V8DNW.........I have been contemplating doing something to the suspension but was slighlty put off by the cost of the JEE kit. However after having done a bit of research I have come to the conclusion that they do provide the best kit on the market.
Did it really transform the ride quality......not just the handling?
Cheers Bish

Nope..........if that is a dig at me not taking it off road for having 'silly' wheels you should see below........just helps to switch to road tyres when on road with 230bhp at the flywheel.
Just wondered - it seemed odd to buy the best off-roader and then make it a mediocre off-roader by fitting short-travel springs, stiff dampers and anti-roll bars to me, but everyone to their own. No 'dig' intended as it wasn't aimed ay your post.Edited by biglepton on Thursday 1st November 14:56
The JEE handling package has a huge effect on the ride quality as well as the handling. Their method is based on fitting softer springs to make the ride more pliant over poor road surfaces, controlled by proper damping - not necessarily stiff (they use adjustable Konis, which are apparently less harsh than Bilstein) - something the £10 standard LR ones can never achieve. In order to keep the vehicle flat round the corners uprated anti-roll bars are used. JEE use a thicker front bar than rear. These bars are made for JE and are not just heavy duty Land Rover ones.
The overall effect is to create a less agitated ride than standard. It is still obviously a Defender in character, just better controlled. My favourite experience was when the owner of a standard 90 of the same age as mine was in the passenger seat - he was bracing himself for an accident as I was still accelerating towards the next corner!
There are alternatives. Scorpion use stiffer rear bars than front for their fast road kit - but I don't have any first or second hand experience of it.
Famous Four just use springs and Bilstein dampers for their handling kit which has a good reputation. Again, I haven't driven a FF converted vehicle. But they are local to me, I've used them for servicing and repair and I trust their work.
You can also buy a range of different bars made by Whiteline, if you want to experiment. And almost every advert in a Land Rover magazine offers springs with different rates and
heights.
I haven't a bad word to say about the JEE handling package. But don't just take my word for it - go for a test drive. I only went to get mine chipped...
re. Biglepton. I loved my Defender on the road - bit like Evo magazines's strapline - the thrill of driving, everytime I went out. People have the preconception of traditional 4x4s being slow - but a properly set up Td5 Defender will fly and have far more character than a Disco 3 or new Range Rover.
Most offroad ability comes down to the driver anyway. I'm proud of being able to get anything stuck, anywhere. My Disco 3 needed recovering 2 hours after picking it up!!
So by process of elimination, this must mean the Veyron comment was aimed at me...?

It was, but I guess everyone to their own! To me taking the legendary axle travel away from a Defender by fitting short stiff springs and road tyres, makes as much sense as lifting a Veyron and fitting mudders, but I suppose it would be a laugh frightening other road users with your unexpected cornering prowess.Just please promise me you aren't intending to slam your Bowler and fit 22" chrome spinners. . . .
