Hello guys, I have a 1997 3 series with the engine as your beloved RR and it starts badly when warm. After a forum search I've found a lot of RR suffering this problem has led to the injectors being replaced. Does anyone know what sort of costs are involved? If it's easy enough to do I could change them over myself, but if they have to be set up or something that needs special equipment then I will give it a miss and get a garage to do the job. I could even have mine taken off the car and reconditioned if that would save on costs as long as the car wasn't off the road for more than say a week. Any help much appreciated.

There is an alternative mod that makes the glow plugs switch on when the engine is hot as well as cold. That's is supposed to sort the problem, it's detailed on some of the land rover forums.

You can try putting a one way valve in the fuel line between the fuel filter and the injector pump. This does cure the hot start problem on the R/R.

If the problem persists you will need to get the fuel transfer pump changed in the back of the injector pump.
This can only be done at a fuel injection shop as the pump will need to be calibrated after the fitting of the new bits.

The problem is apparently caused by the low sulphur diesel we are now served at the pumps!

Hope this helps

Cheers Roy

The car had both fuel pumps (injector pump and the one under the rear seats) changed by the previous owner at great expense in 2005. Shirley that would have included the transfer pump you mention? Also would you happen to know where to get one of these one-way valves you mention? it makes sense for me to fit one now whilst I've got the car in pieces replacing the injectors. Thanks for help.

Just to update, the car has recently cured itself. I new these BMWs were clever but that's something else!
