My dads going to sell 'his' landy (it used to be mine a few years ago, but he 'borrowed' it and I never saw it again) and has asked me to value it for him. However,I think we all know how useless I am at paying the right money for things, so has anyone got any ideas how much it might be worth?

its a:

1973, 88" in black with range rover wheels, overdrive gearbox'd 2.25 diesel engine (i think thats the right size, is that right? its the original engine) which has done 65k from new. All in all, i would say its in good honest condition, with a few scrapes and scratches here and there.

Its taxed and Mot'd and has had lots of new bits and has lots of nice shiny chequerplate on it, including the rear floor bit so you could chuck a body in there and hose it out after-wards without anyone knowing. other than that, it just looks like a landy to me.

heres a picture, if that helps at all:

When i bought it many moons ago I'm pretty sure I got ripped off so my frame of reference isn't particularly valuable I don't think. Id appreciate any thoughts you have.

thanks gang wavey

People tend to buy Series LR's on the quality of the chassis - what's it like?

If it's good with no holes and a good rear x-member and the gearbox and swivels are decent then I'd say about £1000-£1200. If you are in no hurry to sell it, I'll tell you how you can get £2000 for it! Get a cheap hood and stick set and fit them in place of the hardtop. Now repaint the LR in a genuine LR colour, preferably Limestone and then sell it around May time. People will pay far more for a soft-top Landy just before the summer!

Speaking as someone who bought a Series III yesterday. This is spot on. Selling it with a full MOT will ensure it moves quicker and commands a much better price. Buyres are very suspicious of a short MOT as it implies you know it will fail due to corrosion. Two went yesterday on ebay that were identical in spec (even the colour) and condition from what could be seen from the adds. The one with a full MOT went for £300 more.

You might be able to push it up to £1500 if you play on the overdrive and diesel engine, it looks like it has free wheeling hubs as well. It'll be worth mentioning that and priming your dad with the info that every couple of hundred miles he engages them for 20/30 miles to help splash the swivel oil about wink. Also little bits like the Defender hinges set it off nicely if you get the LRO cowboy hat wearing tosser's coming along for a tyre kick. Has the chassis been repaired? If not and if it is in good nick ,remember I've seen your fleet wink, that's a major plus point.

I want a signed copy. Bring one up when you do Lynda's next gig.

She should be ordering one from you.
