All diesel units in the P38 were BMW units. In all honesty a good engine but underpowered in standard for in the P38.Worse if its an auto.Best off getting it chipped with a larger intercooler fitted.

They're much more reliable than the V8s. As said, very slow but with a chip it'll be OK. Auto if you intend to tow anything big, if not then go for a manual. Expect 25ish mpg.

Or you could go for a V8 petrol with an LPG conversion. Cash equivalent MPG to the diesel and it's a V8. Funnily enough I have a 4.6 P38 with LPG for sale at this very moment!!

My indy gave me a P38 Diesel Auto as a courtesy car one time when our 4.6 was having a service.

What a slug.

I have driven a Defender 300Tdi and a Disco with the same lump which although not spritely were adequate but the RR was just awful. I should think the only re-map to give it any sort of performance would need to double the bhp.

Those that are complaining of the performance of the BMW unit in the P38,should try the old VM unit in the Classic! What a pile of shithehe.

i dont think any Range Rover diesel has been good in the car except the new V8 one cloud9 given the choice now if i was going to get a P38 i would get a 2.5 diesel, chip it and run it on veg oil, 25 MPG at 55p per litre.

the plan was to get a deisel chip it and run it on bio deisel, but a lpg conversion would be a possible go'er

The performance is best described as adequate. Smoother than the Land Rover units.

I used to get 25-27 mpg on a run from an auto, dropping to 22 around town.

Get a post facelift car as the electrics are much more robust. Mine occasionally used to throw sickys.

Good thing you never needed a head for it.Four individual heads units, cost over £1500 for the heads alone. The worst engine ever put in to a LR product, followed closely by the 2.5TD

Beat you there - 46p/litre!
I rekon on (based on last complete fill) 11.2 actual mpg from my 4.6 (similar type of multi-point system fitted last year) for city rush hour driving and 17.5 acutal mpg for motorway cruising. Cash equivalent to diesel for me is 26.5 and 41.4 respectively.
