I need some ideas!

Am doing my timing belt on my Defender 200TDi. Have, after much persuasion, managed to remove the damper/pulley centre bolt and four pulley to damper bolts but the pulley/damper itself just won't budge.

I've tried all my pullers but they have either buckled or failed. Used liberal amounts of WD40 to no effect. Tried the big hammer, brute force and ignorance approach but no joy. In need of ideas - desperately.

The guy I bought it from said that the belt was changed around 6 months ago....my arse! Glad I didn't take his word for it!

Can anyone offer any help...preferably today?

Thanks.

Chris

Sounds like you have done all that I could suggest apart from adding heat which is not something I would advocate as there are too many seals and the like that will get fried.

Try asking at http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showforum=2 which is a specific LR forum and gets a lot of traffic. See you over there.

Update : still stuck!

Thanks for the info. Have tried reasonable heat (as much as I dare) but worried about the rubber components of the damper. Also tried plenty of WD40 and two pullers - one on the outside of the damper and now one on two of the small bolt holes.

Have managed to chip the pulley now so a new one will be required if it ever comes off!

Have removed the four small bolts and the large centre bolt but neither the pulley nor the damper are budging. Is there something I am missing!?!?!

Tempted to put it all back together and admit defeat but worried that a garage might not do the job and claim they have! Been burnt on that one before!

Update: It's off!

Perseverance pays off! Mind you, when it first started to move I had a horrid feeling that my puller was giving up again until a chink of shiny metal was seen emerging from the crank casing! Whoooo hooooo!

Now the only thing I need to do is manage to separate the pulley from the damper as it came off in one! Got to do it as I need a new pulley due to the chips! Might have to bite the bullet and buy a new damper too if all else fails.

Now, on with the actual timing belt job....

Thanks for your ideas and advice.
In the end I used plenty of WD40, some heat and some tapping with a big hammer! The final assult came with a modified hub puller and some threaded bar screwed into two of the holes in the damper (usinf the original centre bolt to push against the crankshaft). I put this under some tension, hit the bolt in the middle (part of the puller) then slowly tightened the puller up until at all started to move!
Yippee - really thought this one was going to beat me! So the timing belt change has cost me £60 plud £8 for an angle torque wrench, plus 2 days work - and I've learned form it!!!
