Hi all - first post - thanks for having me! I've spent many happy and unproductive days lurking in the forums, thought it was time to post.

Changing jobs and giving back my company Merc ML350, and faced with having to spend my own money now on something similar-ish. I've got about £20k to spend - I'd rather spend £15k but could stretch to £25k if I had to. (I do about 10,0000 miles pa, mix of school run, load lugging, motorway.

After going round in circles many times, I think I've narrowed it down to a used Discovery HSE (prob get an 05/06 for about £20k?), or a slightly older RR Vogue, maybe 03/04. The Vogue seems like more car for similar money, but am I buying into an expensive problem? Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks for any advice.

Don't get me wrong..It drove nice, and had a good V8 in it. Comfy, etc... But too many annoying problems on the thing.

£20K buys you a LOT more Range Rover than you think it does.

A 53 plate 4.4 Vogue went at Brightwells last week for £8900

Holy st. I paid £20k for my 04 vogue V8 from a main dealer in January frown

Back to topic. Go for the Rangie.

Rangie smile My advice would be to get a petrol V8 and enjoy the experience, you will get a LOT of car for your money. They go anywhere with a fantastic sense of occasion. The infamous front diff issue is now dealt with under a recall, though admittedly, if anything else goes wrong it will be expensive (but then it would on a Disco 3 as well).

Not comparing apples with apples..... hardly helpful to try and play off auction prices against retail. The dealer most likely paid £12kish for yours.

Rangie V8. Always. Just get the front diff sorted (free) by the main dealer and make sure you get your gearbox oil changed every couple of years.

Our Disco 3 Auto (4th disco) has been great. (2years old). My pal had a Disco 3 HSE when they first came out out, and had no problems. He now has a Range Rover which has left him stranded 4 times, and is not very happy!!!! Nice car, but too clever by far if you want reliability .

If you want comfort and style and don't need loads of space, buy the Range Rover. TBH, it is quite old technology now and imho it is starting to look quite dated on the roads. The Disco 3 is a much better car, after all it is one generation on. I think mine is superb having owned a V8 Rangie before this, I don't miss it at all. I think the Disco 3 has all presence on the road, drives beautifully hooked up to the 6 speed auto and can take huge volumes of luggage or 7 adults. If you need that much capability then buy an HSE and get it loaded up.

I saw an 2007 HSE in a dealers y'day for £25k!
