Have got a 2000tdi 90 that I use for offroading and most of my mates have 300tdi's and when we're going up hills on the road theyre all over my ass and it pisses me off!
So....Im looking to up the boost on the turbo and turn up the fuel pump to match. I already have a larger intercooler fitted (standard size but larger core), so what are the safe levels of boost to run and where to put the boost gauge so I can read the correct level of boost? I have been told that 200's are usually set at 0.8bar and 300's at 1.0 bar, is this the main difference in performance that Im suffering?

Note that both of those links go to other forums and you'll find some occasional uncensored 'pub talk' style language that your employer might not like. If in any doubt, don't click until you are in front of your home pc.

Hi

I know of Land Rovers running 1.4 bar very happily, but it depends what you want. If you tuen the boost up it has to be mached with fueling.

Have you turned the Diesel up??? That will make the biggest diffrence if you havn't.

I am running my 110 200tdi at about 1.0-1.1bar and i cannot get anymore with the standard acuator. My next step is Hybrid Turbo and a uprated Forge Actuator so i can run about 1.3bar and peak at 1.4bar.

The best place to T in a guage is follow the pipe of the actuator round to the diesel pump and T in just before the diesel pump. That is the easiest place. You can drill and tap into the inlet manifold for a true reading but we are talking diesel not modded petrol car so it is not so important.

Well I turned the smoke adjustment screw up a full turn, then the diaphram half a turn, then the star wheel a quarter of a turn and found a reasonable difference in performance. So then I turned my attention to the boost presure and fitted a boost gauge which read 10psi at peak on standard boost setting. I have turned up the boost to a modest 13psi and then found I had a little less power than before silly so back to the pump and tweaked all three settings up a little and.......Its bloody worse yet again!!!! WTF?? So I have gone back to my 1st set of adjustments on the pump.

What the hell is going on? mad

And yes I do know the difference between clockwise and anti-clockwise

Hi

When you start playing with the boost you of course have to match it with the fueling. Without a rolling road it is trial and error.

when i run my old 200tdi i hardly tweaked the bits of the pump you've touched. i rotated the diaphram by about 45degrees to improve throttle response but left the rest as standard. i found all they did was make it worse.
what i did adjust is the max fueling screw. on the back of the pump amongst the fuel pipes you'll see a long threaded rod with a screwdriver slot in the end. screw this in for more fuel & power, out for less. just wind it in untill smoke at full throttle (with the boost settled) is excessive & then back a bit.
oh & there is a locking collar on it you'll need to cut off before it will screw in.

heres a couple of links to the same sort of pumps

i did have another link to a really long detailed thread about it, but ive lost it. IIRC it was on www.LR4x4.com

Well I have found that the diaphram is siezed and wont come out so have used liberal amounts of wd40 and have managed to get it too pull out a little and then back again but wont come out completely, so a local diesel pump co. have been working on it and found the pin at the bottom of the diapram had moved/siezed and was stopping the adjustment! I should get it back later today and then I hope to have it all re-fitted before the weekend and then look again at the tuning settings!!
Thanks for your help guys, will report the progress asap.
