Selling Defender Advice
Discussion
Hi folks,
Decided to sell my defender that I have had since new, looking at the market for the prices, they seem to be all over the place. I have listed it on here but no one has rung about it as yet... What do you think to the price? Is it too much? On a side note, the dealer did offer me 6k part ex, as they said thats all they would sell it at!

Too high I think, bearing in mind its a commercial, a quick look on AT found these
Similar to yours albeit slightly longer miles, but is an 05 and yours for just £5650

and an XS Station Wagon with low miles on an 03 for £8295

Don't reckon you will have much interest in your one at anything much more than £7 in truth, even at that price I as a punter would be considering that XS one above especially as its a trader rather than private - don't be mislead by high price ones you may see on AT or the like, they won't be selling either so are an irrelevance.

Back in September I sold my 2004 County 110 Hard top for £10k (55k miles). It was in tip top condition and flawless (yours looks pretty good too). I only got one viewing and luckily he bought it. I had a few over the phone offers of £8k... and a LR dealer offered £8k too in part-ex against a new one... Sold mine via eBay (it stood out 'cus everything else was crap or over-priced). Of course, so much has changed since September...
Suggest you look at http://www.brightwells.com - they have a regular 4x4 auction and you can see what they fetch.
I think £10k right now will buy you a good 06 Defender 110 Hard top after haggling. So difficult to say because it seems very few Defenders are selling right now - there are a few on Autotrader that have been up there for 4/5 months...
I'd put it on eBay with an opening price of £7500... and monitor the level of interest (watchers) - if you get more than 40 watchers I'd say it will sell at a good price. If you only have < 10 watchers than expect a low bid at the last minute (and perhaps pull the ad!). fyi - my 110 had just 3 watchers... luckily my buyer wanted to come along before the end of the auction to view and I grabbed his hand off.
edited to add the observation that very few Defenders sell on eBay right now - lots get no bids at all. I think the 'classified' listings are stagnant yet again the same cars have been showing up for months on end. If you want to sell start with a low opening bid and gauge the interest.

I've been watching the Defender prices for some time now as been toying with the idea of buying a 90XS, after holding value very well even with the credit crunch, over the last few weeks the correction seems to have begun. A number of main dealers seem to be asking almost sensible prices eg 07 90XS black, full spec, 18k miles for c£17k and LR dealers are no longer giving it full BS mode when you go in...
I recognise that the HT is generally bought as a commercial vehicle so is slightly different to the XS but i imagine that prices will be affected pro rata. To sell any car at the moment it really has to be the best AND the cheapest on Autotrader, and even then you have done well....
