i think my starter motoer has just packed up (v8 disco 1 auto) it just clicks on the solenoid - the lights are bright and go dim when trying to start.Does my diagnostic sound correct and also how hard is it to change one.
Thanks
Dave

If your lights go dim when trying to start something is drawing a current. Probably the starter motor, so it doesn't sound like the starter is broken.
How's your battery? Will the car start when you use a set of jump leads/booster pack?

From what you describe i would be inclined to think it is a battery issue not a starter motor problem.

Sounds like there isn't enough current to engage the motor which is why you here the clicking sound. Halfords sell decent batteries at competetive prices, they may well do a quick test for you and tell you if your battery is the problem or not, failing that any garage with a meter will tell you. It is a 2 minute job, go around the back and speak to one of the mechs yourself instead of making a full on booking.

Check the battery voltage when you're trying to start it. If it dips below about 9V it is probably a battery problem. If the battery voltage seems OK then check the voltage between the starter motor main terminal and the engine block. You should see virtually the same voltage here while trying to crank. Any difference would indicate a wiring problem, most likely the earth.

Thanks for all the advice - will get the battery tested today - hope it is the battery as this would be the easiest fix.
