RR or RRS better investment long term?

I realise that this is something of a how long is a piece of string question but would welcome any thoughts.
Now that c£30k gets you a very nice, 18m old TDV8 RR or RRS I just wondered which was seen as the best buy when looking at keeping for around 3 years? The RR seems to certainly have fallen faster than the RRS so far as prices are about the same at 18m old - my gut feeling is that the RRS will probably keep its value better long term as it is a newer model and also physically smaller than the RR which appeals to some people? Personally I much prefer the RR but would welcome any thoughts.
Also does anyone have any practical experience of the comparable running costs of the RR & RRS, i only do about 10k miles per year.

In some respects they are quite even in terms of running costs etc.
With regards to the way they drive then they are different cars, Range Rover is very much a golf-club waft mobile and the RRs is more car like. RRS is a more modern car, RR is starting to feel out of date.
Residual value wise I think the RRS has to be a better bet, not new model on the imediate horizon, and more saught after. Range ROver is getting long in the tooth now, so will start to drop at a relatively fast rate.

I don't think there will be much in it regards depreciation. On the face of it the RRS is considered more modern externally but internally it is relatively small when compared to the RR and the normal suspension settings means there is a lot of roll even on acceleration.
Once I'd driven both in the same week (both TDV8's) it became apparent that the RRS was a re-worked Disco and the RR was a completely different vehicle originally developed by BMW. I found the RR to be more refined - more S-Class like - and spacious.
Drive them both back to back and this should provide you with what you need to make the decision. The depreciation is probably a secondary issue.

Having had to make the same decision myself recently, I have to say the RR Classic interior does feel more luxurious. But then it's not like the RRS' interior is a dump. W
We were swapping from the wife's 8yr old 1.8gs freelander, so tbh a wheelie bin would have felt more luxurious.
In the end we've plumped for the sport. The classic, just felt too enormous. And while we do have 3 dogs, we don't have kids and won't be taking other people in the back that often so I felt we didn't 'need' that much more space. But who knows, after a year we might decide we need a 'proper' one and swap
I have both and would rate the RR as a far better car, although I am comparing petrol supercharged RR to TDV8 Sport. The Sport is finished off very cheaply in comparison to the RR and as they have sold so well, there will be loads coming up for sale, mostly in the same colour, this will do nothing for the values.
If you buy an 18 -30 month old car it will already have lost 50 per cent of its value so you shouldn't be in too bad a position. Go for the RR!

Thanks for all the feedback, i have to say that I was also surprised by how low rent the RRS interior was when i first saw it - and I am coming from a 2003 ML!
My gut feeling is to sit tight a little bit longer and then look at a sub 20k miles 07 or later RR TDV8 Vogue which i guess will be somewhere mid £20k's the way the economy is going. For what its worth, I fancy metallic grey with black interior, supercharged grill & vents and 20" supercharged wheels. I always feel it is best not to be too specific when buying secondhand!

My gut feeling has always been to go for the RR - I actually nearly bought a brand new 4.4 v8 Y reg back in 2001, that was the old model of course. I was offered £24k trade in on my S reg clk230 and decided not to go for it, i sold the clk for £18k 6 months later so mega depreciation is not something new! I dealt with the LR garage in Highgate, north London which I heard was the worst performing LR garage in the UK at the time but I always found them quite pleasant and helpful (not that I bought a car so I guess that didn't help...)
Brand new TDV8 Vogues are being advertised now through main dealers at £49,950 so i figure an 07 with low mileage will be c£30k for cash in the not too distant future. Not sure what is happening to TD6 prices as they must have been hit even worse presumably?

May be slightly long in the tooth, but its still has tonnes more class. Luxurious interior compared to cheap low rent interior of RRS.Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
