Hi

Ever since I lived in Hampstead, London and used to stroll past one most days, I have always liked the look of the Heritage edition which LR produced around 1999/2000. Now I am in a position to buy one, I thought I should check out some more information and any help would be gratefully received.

I am assuming that the Heritage edition is exactly the same as a standard 90 of that era simply with the changes in trim, does anyone know if that is correct or if there were more significant differences? Also I obviously notice the changes to the grill and the green leather seats, is there anything else I am missing? Finally, does anyone know how many were produced as they do seem to be quite rare.

More generally, how prone is the defender to rusting? Naively I assumed they were aluminium bodied and so would not rot....

They are aluminum.But normally get corrosion where the ali meets metal.Your biggest thing to look for on a defender is corrosion.Check inside the footwells.Lift the carpets to inspect properly.Check around the top of the bulkhead.Also check the outer riggers and the rear cross member.

Corrosion can be exacerbated by vehicles that have spent a life in the country side.All that early morning dew,doest do wonders for a vehicle.I have normally found town cars to be better condition.

Dont expect Range Rover levels of comfort.At the end of the day its just a jazzed up working vehicle.But an Iconic one at that.

On the plus side.Running costs will be low,as the vehicle is not hampered by complicated electronics.If they do go wrong then they are cheap to fix.

I have had my 50th V8 Defender for near on two years now.And apart from its yearly service.All it has needed is a rubber door strip at £30.And this is on a vehicle that is in constant use,and used every day.

But if you have a defender with terminal chassis rot for about 4 grand you can get an brand new chassis fitted

you will either love it or hate it

Hi,

I think there were 300 heritages made, a mix between 90's and 110 station wagons in the two colous, Bronze and atlantic green.

Spec is:
Exterior:
Cream roof
Front and rear mudflaps
Body colourd wheel arch eyebrows, headlight surrouns and wheels.
Silver front bumper, hinges all round and front mesh grille
Silver side steps with chequer plate
Aluminium Land Rover plaques.
ABS/ETC (Optional)

Interior:
Green leather seat and steering wheel
Aluminiun gear leaver
Ivory dials with bight bezels
Air con (optional)

So nothing to different but some nice little touches.

The silver bits and the ally land rover badges seem to suffer worst on these but nothing that can be sorted.

What colour you looking for?

There are 3 heritages on autotrader atm, two high miles and one 50,000 miles for 9,500, seem good to me. All in Bronze green.

Have you ever considered a Tomb raider 90?.A better looking 90 IMHO.

Many thanks for all the feedback. There is actually quite a nice sounding one for sale on this site classifieds (and not at a ridiculous looking price which seems to not always be the case on PH!), 1 owner, 28,000 miles for £10k. Thinking of having a look but it does mention the heater has conked out which is not ideal at the moment. I am guessing you will be looking realistically at c£250 to fix that plus the car will probably be coming up to MoT and tax time so have to try and factor all points into the price. Equally, I recognise these are quite rare cars so the pricing works a bit differently to a car where you can just find yourself another one in 5 minutes.
