i recently bought a defender 90 with the 2.5 td engine.I desperately think it needs a bit more umph. it seems to be alright through the gears but flat as a witchs tit on a run, is there anything i can do to give it some more go? thanks adam

Not sensibly, it's an antiquated diesel engine which is inherently slow.

It can be replaced with a 200 TDI but it would probably be cheaper for you to buy a later Defender.

There is plenty of information around the net about transplanting both the 200tdi and 300tdi in place of your 2.5TD
The 200tdi is a straight swap if you use the Defender version, the Disco variety will go too but its not quite a straightforward job - needing some special parts, which are available now.

The 300tdi is a bit more complicated. You'd need to change the engine chassis mounts.

Beyond that I'm afraid I can't help. I still have the 2.5TD engine in mine.
I've taken the roof off mine and converted it with a mohair truck cab. Losing all that weight made a considerably difference to the old girl wink
