Porous block/slipped liner

Air con tube blocked leading to soaked carpets, especially near side front

Oh yes, did I mention porous block/slipped liner

Sorry to bang on about the porous block but I have a 2001 V8 ES which needed a new engine at 55k. These engines run hot and have alloy block and steel liners. OK within normal operating temps but when they overheat the expansion and contraction of the 2 metals can cause the liners to slip. Keep the cooling system in tip top condition, and it won't overheat, but lots of owners don't. Have a sniffer test done before you buy which will show if the head gasket is good and the liners are OK.

You can get top hat liners fitted which supposedly resolves the problem but not cheap.

Don't get me wrong. They are great cars. I'm on my 3rd ES. The later Thor engines are almost economical at around 17 mpg. Good comfort levels, the ES has all the toys, great tow vehicle and a load lugger extradonaire.

Good luck.
