i know i have posted previous posts similar to this as for a range rover... current car. but i have a major dillema. I am looking to get a disco series 2 for doing odd jobs and when about in the country, bit of off roading. Both cars are what i am looking for, es spec and dark blue with not to many miles on either the td5 is £5995 and the v8 is £4500. What one should would you go for and why? are there any reasons why you would go for one more than the other, other than the price difference. any major issues with either???? thanks

In theory the TD5 is more complex and harder to fix if it goes wrong. The V8 is, well, a Rover V8 at the end of the day; there are hundreds of people that can put them right. Obviously the fuel cost is "the killer". However:

Let's say the TD5 will give you 25mpg (optimistic IMHO) and you do 5,000 miles per year. That will cost you about £900 in DERV.

If the V8 does 15mpg and you do the same 5,000 miles per year, you need to spend £1375 on unleaded.

So over a year, the TD5 will save you £475 in fuel. But costs £1500 more. So in 3 years, you still won't have saved any money by having the sluggish diesel.

Hang on, I think I just talked myself into buying a V8 Disco...

Both engines are electronically controlled. The V8 has a few possible major issues, slipped liners for example. The TD5 also has a few specific issues.

The TD5 is better supported in terms of diagnostics that you can get yourself. Nanocom being excellent, and now letting you access pretty much all the electronics, from engine, Suspension, BCU, ABS SLABS etc

This doesnt work on the V8 ones.

What year are the ones you are looking at?

My brother just bought a 1 owner 2001 V8 es with everything and 80k miles for 2800!!

I have recently bought a 2003 72k mile TD5 ES for £6000, and completed a round trip to the alps and back. Car didnt skip a beat, but only returned 22.5 mpg. The engine is noisy and very agricultural feeling. I would imagine the V8 to be a much nicer driving experience overall.

Undoubtedly. I suspect one has to be doing some fairly major mileage for the fuel savings to outweigh the downsides of the TD5.

You know you want a V8. I went for the V8 and didn't regret it.

Yes the V8 can have problems. I have had 3 now with out a hitch. At that sort of money you are at the top end of bangernomics. The ES was over £35k new. Parts are pretty cheap for either, but you only get the V8 smile with a V8.

Unless you are going near water go for the V8.

The diesel is ok too but can you tell my preferance?

I've owned both (both automatics). A few random thoughlets...

- The Td5 is noisy and slow. To the extent we've named a nearby road "Nearly Killed Hill" after the occasion we were unable to get past an artic going up it (indeed I was unable to out accelerate him...) which was easy in the V8.

- It cruises at 80 OK, once you get there, and the diesel noise subsides over 40 or so. It'll cruise at 70 with the trailer+TVR on.

- We get 23mpg from our Td5 in mainly town driving. It doesn't notice when it has the TVR+trailer on the back - it's still slow!

- The throttle lag from stationary is horrific. I no longer try and jump out into gaps in traffic because of the delay between flooring the throttle and anything happening.

- The V8 sounds better and is a nicer drive

- We were getting under 10mpg from the V8, in town driving, and maybe 20mpg on a run, without the trailer.

- If I won the lottery I'd go back to a V8 tomorrow. Until then, I'll take the fuel consumption of the Td5.

Remember you can also chip the TD5 and it will then outperform the V8.

The JE remap I had done to my TD5 made an amazing difference. I can find gaps in traffic quite safely. Agree with all the above comments about the TD5. Just remember what they were designed for, because thats what they feel like to drive. For the record I have had Freelander, Disco, and Rangies in the past. Eventually I will get the new rangie TDV8, but until then the well equipped TD5 ES does the job. Also whilst I own such a machine I will be green laning for the first time, and with my snorkel shall try and take in some water crossings, something that I probably wouldn't do in a fairly new rangie.

I've also owned both, also both autos.

1999 TD5 used to average 21mpg, 24mpg on a steady motorway run
2003 V8 gives 17mpg on a run, 15mpg around town

TD5 didn't cost me a panny apart from pads, V8 has cost me a fortune with cooling issues, new engine ...

not sure what some of you are talking about

my td5 auto es, is quiet for a diesel, certainly no worse than my 05 a4 and a dam sight less vibi

turns in a steady 28 to the gallon round town and sets off like a scalded cat from the lights once you got the hang of the non linear throttle

the handling is excellent and will embarrass hot hatches on a bendy road and ride quality to rival a luxury saloon.

I can only assume youve got really poor examples.

I Agree, the auto is very very sluggish, budget for at least an ECU remap and a bigger intercooler if you can afford it.
