Hi,

I have 10K to 12k to spend on a Defender, I have been looking now for a couple of weeks and been to see a couple and the pricing is all over the place....

Am I missing something or is this normal.

I have seen a 1998 tdi 90 advertised up for 15k yikes

And looked at a really nice 2003 G4 90 for 11K frown but missed out (snooze you lose and all that)

I'm sure the right one will turn up but it is a little confusing,

Steve

Sounds normal. Defender pricing is all over the place. Some owners have a misplaced impression of the value of them... hence you find old tatty well worked models with asking prices well in to the stratosphere. It pays to be patient and very fussy.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I have never come accross this before and thought I was going mad...your right there are lots of well worn models being asked top dollar for.

must be patient, must be patient, must be patient...

I thoroughly agree with the post above - some people do have a very optimistic idea of value.

Having said that, value does depend very much on condition rather than age and/or mileage. There are plenty of TD5 sheds going about for £5k that need a stload of work done to them and some really nice tdi's around at £10k that are in great condition and will run and run and run.

Another problem is that many people try to add near-new cost to the value of their second hand vehicle for modifications and it just doesn't work like that. (e.g adding on a few grand for lifted suspension, roof rack, snorkel etc).

Defender pricing is a nightmare.
Lots of rubbish about that people have a funny idea of price on but they don't always sell lots been on market for a long time.
Must say I think the ealier Defenders seem to be made of better metal than the later ones.
Just sold my 300Tdi 90 Commercial (without even an advert) sensible price and good truck.
Only have the Td5 90 CSW now and it does not feel as well made as the 300Tdi (but it is more comfortable!).

With that budget I would beg borrow or steal the extra and buy a heavily discounted brand new model.

Or what about something like this-

Dont worry about it being a basic model-you can add the extras later
