Hi Folks,

After much searching, I've just stumbled across a cab-back 110 Defender Tomb Raider Edition with all the bits (plus a winch and toe ball) thats in reasonable order (few scratches here and there, nothing major, but not pristine at all), and Id quite like it . Problem is, I dont seem to be able to get a decent valuation on it, as I cant find another anywhere(I can see 90's and 110 station wagons, but no double cabs), and dont therefore no whether what the guy is asking is fair or not. Its done 78k and Id be the 4th owner. Anyone got any ideas?

Also, the TD5 lump- is it any good? reasonable MPG? Its been used to tow a boat from time to time, and whilst the clucth feels ok, will this work have trashed the engine/ box?

Id appreciate any thoughts you might have folks, many thanks for your time.
N.

I saw one this week (albeit a 90 02 with 72k ish)at 10,500. Youre paying a bit of a premium for the Tomb Raider models as they were a limited run of 250 if memory serves. TD5 is a good engine and, like most others, responds to being regularly serviced. Regular off road/ farming stuff does the real damage so towing a boat should be well within its capabilities. Good workhorse so tends to take most things thrown at it. Not recession proof but theres always, always a market for defenders irrespective of whether the world is going to hell in a hand cart or not...

also, do we think there's a premium or a penalty for it being a double cab, price wise?

90 Tomb raiders are the more sought after example. So i would expect to pay less for the 110.

I thought they only made the tomb raiders in a 90 but i'll stand corrected. Mpg late twenties/early thirties with normal driving

No!. They came in 110 crew cab as well.On the valuation, then i would expect to pay between £8,500 to £10,000.There are more roppy 110 tomb raiders about than 90,s. Just make sure you are getting the "genuine" example. LR SV made a few show and promotion vehicles that were no actually not classed as "Tomb Raiders". Could have a bit of a problem when it comes to getting Tomb Raider specific parts. I have an interesting story on that one.

Yes, didn't Angelina drive a 110 double cab in the actual film? Except hers was a V8 instead of a TD5, wasn't it? scratchchin

Some years ago. Someone i know bought a "Tomb raider" from a well know LR dealer on the outskirts of South London. The vehicle sat pride of place on there rockery at the front of the dealership.Anyway a deal was made and, off went a happy customer.

Ten months down the line and one night some thieving bds nicked the special Tomb Raider badges from off the front wings. These badges were specially commisioned by LR from a hatton garden jewellers(I kid you not).

A phone call to the dealers for new badges resulted in the need for vehicle documents being presented at the dealership in order for new badges to be made. After a week he had heard nothing, and called the dealers to check on how his badges were coming along. To his dismay he was told that the documents he provided were not for a Tomb Raider and hence that they couldnt have the badges made. This was the same dealership he had bought the LR from ten months previous. He was told that what he had was a ("Replica. And there were a few of them about") The voice went a little quiet and distant on the phone when it was pointed out that the so called "Replica" was bought from them!.

With a bit of investigation it was found out that unlike the 50th Defender(where a number of Defenders were pulled from the production line and built) The Tomb Raider and Heritage models were taken from a numbered batch.Anything outside these doesnt count as a Tomb Raider.

The fact was also that LR built a number of pre-production Tomb Raiders for film and promotion work that tied in with the film and its release. This is what the person i know had bought. At this stage(and with no legal advice sought) it was a matter between himself, the dealership and LR. With LR putting the onus on the dealership, and there "description" of the vehicle they sold.Unfortunately the owner suddenly passed away. The matter was never resolved and to this day the LR still drives around badgeless.
