Freelander engine management light

Howdy Chaps,
Hoping someone can help me here, my mum has a 2005 1.8 Freelander. Has been having intermittent problems with the car "kangarooing" and being down on power, yesterday the engine management light came on briefly but didnt stay on.
Is there a way on these cars to get the dash to flash up a fault code by bridging a diagnostic plug or pressing a sequence of buttons? I know you can on some cars?
If not any thoughts on what the problem might be?
