Series 1 Defender
Discussion
So I am currently in the process of selling my bike as I don't get a chance to use it and my wife doesn't like the idea of it now we have an 8 month old daughter. I have reluctantly agreed to sell it, but on the condition that I can get another toy.
I have always loved the defender (one of those cars you simply have to own before you die) so thought why not go to the other end of the performance spectrum and get a classic. The problem is I know very little about them, or even the best place to source one. It would be used as a pure toy in the same way the bike was, something to go off into the country in for a few hours every weekend.
Any ideas?

- What to look out for
- Where to look to buy
- Clubs to join
- Reasons I should/shouldn't do it
Thanks guys.

I think you should have a good Google around and find out a bit more about them.
The term Defender came in quite late so anything you are looking at will be before that and using the name will both offend the seller and indicate how much you 'know' about them.
A series 1 will be expensive so best left to those who really want one for their collection.
Your best bet would be to look for an early 90 or 110 or maybe a 109.
When you have found a model that will suit your need then you can ask specific questions about buying that particular model.

I was in the same boat when I sold my R6.
I ended up with a 1987 90 (Defender) with a 3.5 V8 from a Range Rover classic. Stainless exhaust makes it sound like a Bowler Wildcat. Superb toy.
From my limited knowledge and point of view.
- What to look out for
Rusted chassis. Most of the car is a large Meccarno kit, that a mechanically challenged muppet like me can play with. However if the chassis is in poor condition then it’s a huge job.
I’d buy a couple of the magazines, as they give good buyers guides / overviews.
- Where to look to buy
I got mine through Pistonheads.
- Clubs to join
Landyzone Website / Green Laneing / Herts Lanes thread would be a good place for you to ask questions from a local band of enthusiasts.
- Reasons I should/shouldn't do it
Very Cheap Insurance. Great fun. Go for it.
(PS: Shameless plug. Mine could be on the market if you’d like a look. (Bedfordshire))
