Hi I have developed a clunking noise in my defender when I am just about to stop. It is really at crawling pace and seems to be coming from the back diff, but am wondering if it could be coming from g/box or trans box and trying to stop the diff. When the landy is just about to stop there is a clunking noise and you can feel the jeep trying to stop and then release again. I am not in gear when doing this and I have also put the high / low box into neutral but it still does it. I have jacked the rear up and spun the wheels together and all is quiet, also have crawled under the rear not in gear but on the ground and when I turn the prop shaft there is play left to right but I think that is to be expected but there is also a slight knocking at the end of each turn (if that makes sense)Has anyone else experienced this.
I now KNOW why landrovers run for ever because they are a money pit and am constantly replacing parts (but still love it)

Hi,
check the "A" frame ball joint - on top of the axle in the centre, if worn this will clunk as you accelerate and decelerate.

Took it to garage today but that was fine, as usual the b--dy thing would not make the noise when I took mechanic out but it done it all the way to the garage. He thinks that the uj joint could be ceased a bit but I am not expecting that to fix it.He did find a gearbox mounting on its way out and says that the front prop shaft is rattling a bit on the splines. There goes this weeks wages

I kept hearing a clunking/metallic noise from the back of my 90, for a couple of weeks. It wasn't consistent, but would normally happen at low speeds, and occasionally when cornering. Turned out it was just the back of the drivers seat hitting the rear bulkhead... sillyrolleyes
