Hit the offending part hard with a hammer and it should start working again, thats usually the best quick fix on a Defender.

well, tried moving the old girl today after removing the front prop to make the front wheels free wheel, turned the steering lock to lock whilst getting out of a parking spot and now the steering will only turn half a turn to the right now so i reckon it might be the CV joint broken up. not managed to get it stripped yet but ill keep you posted with the full saga!!!

It will be the CV joint.

If its a common problem with your style of offroading.... go to Ashcroft transmissions... they do Cv's and shafts with a 5 year warranty... not cheap but better than continual failure !

well, this is the first time ive damaged anything off roading really so just think i was unlucky! i had a feeling it was the CV joint! if i get uprated CV's and shafts do i risk damaging the diff before anything else? as i thought the shafts were sort of designed to break before anything bigger let go?

If you've only got CV joint failure to worry about, I'd say your doing well.

Below is a list of failures / breakages on mine since the begining of may this year;

1) Front propshaft snapped

2) Exhaust manifold gasket started blowing

3) I found another oil leak

4) I found more rust on the NSF inner wing. I replaced this already in the winter and had it waxoiled

5) Both front doors developed faults. One wouldn't open from the inside, the other wouldn't open from the outside

6) The spare wheel carrier fell apart with rust. I last had removed this to inspect 6 months ago. It was tip top then

7) The boot door developed an intermitant fault so that sometimes it would open, sometimes it wouldn't

8) The drivers side door glass half fell of it's runners

9) The altinator packed in

The starter motor stopped starting

10) The tops of my door pillars are shot with rust. These were rust free 6 months ago

11) My windscreen started to de-laminate

12) Drivers front door and NSR door have both dropped and need re-hanging, (again)

13) N/S door mirror motor stopped working

Pah, thats only a lowly 2.16 failures per week. I've known it to be a lot worse than that.
bloody ell!!! truth be told mine is exhibiting a few of the faults listed above!! the drivers door doesnt open from the inside and the window on that side sometimes comes out of its runners! but i plan to get these fixed asap because its not a bad one to be honest! must say though in the time ive had my series 3 it had less problems than my 90! felt somehow a bit sturdier.
