My trusty P38 4.6 engine went bang the other day, oil pump, timimg chain sprockets, casing all smashed.
Haven't gone any deeper into the engine yet so could be more, can the valves hit the psitons?

I need advice, do I haul the engine out and rebuild it or get a new engine or get another car?

any one got a 4.6 engine or a P38 for sale?

Hi Simon

That problem you have do you know how it happened. I have had a few rover V8 over the past few years and have never heard of that happening on them before. I would think it is possible if you broke the timing chain for the valves to hit the pistons but the pushrods are driven by hydraulic tappets which would possibly compress. Saying that it is easily repaired in the car and the spares are cheap and there are plenty of second hand timing covers on ebay. Try this forum for a wealth of knowledge on rover v8s

This guy is excellent.

You should speak to him [Rowland].... he has seen most problems in the past and will give good advice.
