Probably a tad premature as (afaik!) there's only precious few folks that have driven them, but perhaps we have a landie salesperson amongst us or something?

Popped through the dealership today to have a poke around the discovery 3. Really shouldn't have as it's given me the itch to buy another LR having convinced myself there's enough room.

Really taken a liking to them again having gone off them a little. Had a sit in an HSE one and really was impressed, it's been some time since I was in a 3 and the last one I was in was a base model so quite some difference.

As always, there's a downside, most of the boxes are ticked, but I'm still a little disheartened by the lack of grunt the 2.7 affords. Now, with the 2010 model on the horizon and orders being taken, I'm curious as to how much better the 3.0 diesel is over the 2.7. The salesman was, as you'd expect incredibly enthusiastic, extolling how they put them side by side and the 3.0 romped the 2.7 and so on, and how much better the handling is, yadda yadda yadda. To those that've driven them, my question is how much of an improvement is the Discovery 4 over the 3?

I've got the option of a discounted 3 (not discussed figures yet) or a list price 4. I'd like one sooner than later, and as much as I like the new refresh the 4 has had, I can't help but wonder if it's really worth the premium over the 3. I've been offered a 4 for september delivery (late) but it's not quite my ideal spec, so I'd be looking at end of sept/beginning oct. I'm fairly keen to get something sorted out sooner rather than later, but I do wonder how fast the 3 will depreciate when there's a new model out. They're hardly holding their value amazingly well as it is!

What should I be looking to pay for an HSE spec discovery 3 brand new?

Should I just wait for a 4? Can it really be worth the £xx,xxx.xx premium over the 3?

Cheers,
Stu

You may want to ask this question over on www.disco3.co.uk.

The 2.7 can be chipped to produce 20% more power and 30% more torque for a modest cost (£350ish); see http://www.jeengineering.co.uk/discovery-3/diesel-...

Broadspeed seem to be offering about £5k off new Disco3's at the moment; you will take a hit on depreciation for sure, so discounts may be better when dealers start receiving new stock, obliging them to off-load their demo 3's.

I bought a 7 month old SE in Feb for £25k, new price was £41k.

For me, that sort of price difference for a family bus was just too much to buy new.

I got the SE because the only significant thing the HSE seemed to have was the Alpine Roof, which as it happens I don't like.

I'm just in the throws of looking at chips, Bell Auto Services seem popular and very well regarded, but to be honest, in that type of vehicle, I've never though it's actually that bad.

How fast do you want to go in a 2.7 tonne bus with the family on board?

If you like the D3 and it's down to money, then buy one over a D4. The D4 will be a much better package than the D3, but will come at a price. Nigh on £50k for a new one, with probably not much discount. Best bet is to buy a D3 HSE, AFTER the launch of the D4!

The D3 does have punch between 2k-3k revs, but it isn't a sports car................

Buy a D4. It is important to support us future 2nd hand buyers of D4s.

Have just gone though all this with the wife's car - decided in the end that with the current discounting that a D3 was really good value and in the end we opted for a XS with most of the options on at just over £30k (plus got excellent p/ex on the 2 vehicles we chopped in. Looked at the HSE but they were "only" offering discount of £6k on HSE whereas got discount of nearly £10k on fully loaded XS. Got to say your right about the 2.7 being a bit sluggish - they are generally ok its just when overtaking they are lacking so currently looking at getting it remapped - additional e. 50bhp plus 90lbft extra for about £300 - it can't be that far off the new one then. You can improve the cornering abilities by changing the shocks to bilsteins (LRO mag July I think)

Land Rover Wooburn Green were happy to do the remap and maintain the warrenty when I looked into buying a D3 last year. I guess things may have changed

And that's why you do one of the ones like Bell which is an upload into the flash memory via the OBDII port.

Should you need to you swap back to the standard map and no one is the wiser!

Not so, I have a re-map & have had no problems with warranty work. I had a new front diff. replaced, which one could loosely argue was affected by the increase in bhp/torque, but it's a known fault anyway & wasn't queried at all.

Several other small niggles sorted under warranty, none of which a re-map would have affected anyway.

Remember the dealer wants/needs warranty work.

Which remap do you have and how much of a difference did it make?

I had my D3 re-mapped by TurboChip in 2006 after it had done 1,000 miles, also had an ITG air filter fitted at the same time. It now has approx. 50bhp & 50lb/ft more than standard

I was so impressed by the D3, that I decided to use it for daily business use.
It was a tad under powered for this type of use but the re-map has rectified that.

Look at disco3.co.uk and read the countless threads on re-mapping.

I'd be happy with any of the following tuners all of which can be found via disco3.co.uk :

TurboChip
JEengineering
TorqTune
Bells Auto's.

Avoid the plug in boxes from the likes of Tunit etc. the D3 doesn't like them.

BTW, the standard maps on newer models are much better & although no more powerful than earlier models, feel much better to drive. So don't expect to feel a massive difference, but you will notice it in the mid-range.

OK so the warranty may not be an issue, what about insurance premium increases?

Have you had some sort of bad experience with a remap?

No it is just if you have a remap then clearly you have modded your car and so insurance co needs to know or u r driving uninsured. I mentioned warranties as other marques eg mercedes check for this and refuse warranty claims. This is despite the tuners claims that it isn't traceable.
I wouldn't want people to not be aware of these points but judging by the lack of responses to this thread then warranty hasn't been a problem and insurance has been declared.

Think it's just par for the course really, I couldn't live with one without a remap tbh. Insurance isn't a problem, they'll probably be thankful it's not another stupid bhp project from japan hehe

Currently doing battle with the dealer over price of an D3 HSE they've got in stock, been offered it for around the 41k mark with a couple of options (sidesteps etc). Not convinced it's a great price, but fairly sure there's not a lot more to come off it.

I think the 4 is more than I'm happy to pay now I've had some time to think about it, especially as I've just had a play in a new M3, and have been trying desperately to justify having one hehe

Maybe a tricked up newer defender for work and play, and an RS6 avant to run around in is more sensible hehe

They were selling brand new HSEs in the firesales at Xmas time for 34k ...

DriveTheDeal will do a new auto for 37.4k and that's direct from a LR dealer, so there would appear to be some more movement in price to be had smile
