I’m toying with the idea of buying a Land Rover defender as my daily runner as I need something I can use for work, but also use at the weekend to move copious amounts of rubbish from my house restoration.

My only concern is that it will kill me on my daily commute (50mile round trip on motorways).

I used to borrow an S2 of a mate and even with overdrive it wasn’t short of a glorified tractor. However as I’m looking at a good 01/02 td5 90, my hope is that they have progressed enough to make this idea practical.

Anyone done similar and can comment?

Many Thanks

Julian

hello.
yes the series 2 is an old relic, but lovely. i have just bought one and have done about 100 miles in three days. and as much as i love it, its not practicle as an every day vechile.
but the td5 defenders are ALOT better. more refined and comfortable. i went straight into one after driving the series 2, and it seemed so civilised and comfortable.
just do it.

I am currently running a TD5 06 plate 110 as daily vehicle, fine on normal roads, and will keep up with traffic on a motorway, but gets very noisy above 60. Anything up to that is ok. i average about 29mpg, can get a bit more if careful, and less at motorway speeds.
Regularly doing 400 miles a week, and as you say-its great for 'weekend work' as well.

Hi, I went from a 2001 bmw M5 to a 2005 defender 110 XS
chose the XS spec so as to maintain just a few creature comforts, truck has been used a hell of a lot more seeing as I can tow trailer to the dump, collect materials, tow huge trailer tent, take dog out, park it anywhere and it scrubs up nice enough for a visit to a country hotel for a mates wedding.
A great allrounder, running costs very low - insurance a 3rd of the price for the M5, 400 miles to a tank knocking about with a mixture of roads and whilst yes a bit noisy on the motorway it is comfortable and the view is superb which the kids like.
I am toying with the idea of a larger intercooler and a remap and an overdrive which should make higher speeds more attainable and bearable but as an allround package I cannot fault it.
