1998 4.6 HSE
It started as a slight noise on the way home from work last night.
It got a little more noisy by the end of the 15 mile journey, but nothing much.
However, when I pulled out of the drive this morning it sounded pretty serious and by the time I got to my regular garage, it was as if a set of roadworkers (at least one with a jackhammer) were following me.
The diagnosis is a new rear diff required.
I suppose I should have realised I was due a reality check as it had been ok for most of this year!
Anyone had any experience of this repair? I'm assuming it'll be a secondhand diff etc but it'll still be expensive.
Oh well, time to amend my letter to Santa!

Shentodj

I had exactly the same on mine,
My repair bill came to £750 odd, and was a replacement unit fitted. Some of the teeth had been destroyed!.
All the work was carried out by Nick Kerner 4WD. http://www.nk4wd.co.uk/

Assumimg from your previous vehicles that you are fairly handy with the spanners, and assuming that the P38 diffs are fairly similar to other Land Rover units (Defenders and Discos), then it won't be too difficult a job. For the price of a second-hand diff and a Haynes manual (and a few tools) it will be a fairly straight-forward job (remove prop, both half shafts and unbolt diff from front of casing). We have done Disco diffs in a field with a bag of spanners before when one broke during a show!!!
Yet more bad news - I'm told by the garage, that one rear corner "is just hanging on" and so it needs a new rear hub assembly too.
Total I'm being advised is:
335+vat for recon rear diff
332+vat for rear hub etc
Total inc fitting & vat = £1008 - MERRY CHRISTMAS!
And in answer to the previous comment - no, I'm hopeless with spanners.
Oh well, that'll several other bits that shouldn't go wrong again for a while - my car is definitely the R.Rover equivalent of "Trigger's broom".

price for the diff is about right.

and price for rear hub is alright as well.
Oh the joys of Range Rover ownership!
