P38 TAILGATE NOT OPENING

My lower tailgate will not open on my p38.The button is working but obviously the catch doesn,t work,only after pushing the button a lot of times then it opens.When the tailgate is open the catch works so i am thinking i need to line the strikers up, as they look a bit high and maybe getting stuck.Any ideas?thanks dave
