Thinking about getting a Discovery TD5
Discussion
Hi all.
I'm thinking about getting a Discovery TD5, just wanted to know what you thought about them, are they any good? is there any prob with them? ect?. At the mo i've got an Audi A4 Avant (04) and we have just had a baby and we think the Audi is to small for us now, we think the Disco would be alot safer and have more room in it, we don't live in the sicks but we do live out of town in a small village and we did get suck there when it snowed in feb.
It would be nice to hear what you guys think.
Thanks for you time.
Johnny

Personally I think it makes a lot of sense. I did read your other post and also read many of the stupid biased comments from other narrow minded PH'ers. Personally I'd ignore the lot of them and do what you want.
The only thing I'd say is most LR's even of the D2 vintage do like a bit of TLC. Probably more than your current Audi does. That said if you look after it there is no reason why it won't be reliable and last a very long time.
I'd try and make sure you get a well specced one with ACE (active cornering enhancement). While it adds complexity it does make them corner flatter and drive better. Such systems use air bags for he suspension. I would think most D2's are due for these to be replaced by now. They generally only get a bad name for reliabiltiy for these due to people not maintaining them correctly.
I would also highly recommend chipping/mapping the TD5 engine. There is a fairly easy 40hp gain to be had. It'll drive a lot better and probably be more economical too.

Hi Johnny,
I agree with the above reply.
I have been very happy in my Disco 2 TD5. It's very smooth and has been 100% reliable. The only complaint I would have is that the engine is a little noisy until you get to cruising speed.
I have just bought a lovely 57 plate range rover vogue and I am selling my TD5. It is the facelift version with the much nicer lights. It has been re-mapped by JE engineering only 6 months ago, has full service history, last being a couple of months ago at Guy Salmon Land Rover in Portsmouth. It is the top of the range ES version with leather , electric seats, sat nav, heated seats etc....It is dark metalic green with cream interior. I will be putting it on the classifieds in the new year, but you are welcome to contact me before if you want.
