Freelander exhaust fumes

When we park up our 2001 TD4, there is a strong smell of diesel fumes coming from under the bonnet. Any ideas what the potential issue might be?

Does it have a fuel burning heater like on the D3 and RRS? If it only happens on days when less than 5C, when the engine is cold, then I expect that to be your answer. The FBH, pre-heats the engine to create better fuel brun when cold.
