I'm considering one, won't claim to know nearly enough about them yet but (I believe) interested in a SWB, something with heaters (apparently they don't all come with them?!), and something that doesn't need any work beyond being serviced.

I've checked the Classifieds and the usual AT/eBay but you never know...

Oh, I'm in the Midlands area.

Max of £4k, prefer to spend less but of course what you save you may spend fixing stuff...

As I said, still getting to grips with things as there's loads of models out there, but in a nutshell I'm after something compact, don't need back seats but would prefer rear side windows vs. a "van" type hard-top.

For that budget you should find something reasonable.Ex utlities company ones can be had for that kind of money. And a lot of them.B.T. Powercompanys etc seem to be in better shape than most.Parts are cheap on any defender and they suit well to the d.i.y mechanic.

You'd think wouldn't you, yet on Autotrader there are 2 within 60 miles, eBay isn't much better hence thought I'd take a punt and ask here.

They've all got heaters, it's just that they don't always work very well (which then becomes a running joke about lusting after a car with a heater)! £4k should get you a very decent one, but there are lots out there which are overprices because the owner think's they are gold dust!! spend plenty of time looking and don't reject one if it's the right price because it needs a bit of work - they all will to some extent and at some point in their lives. It would be really frustrating to buy a really expensive 'good-'un' which then developed a major fault which couldn't be seen at the time of purchase.

Yes, I feel a bit of a knob for the heater question now but you live and learn. Next dumb question - what are the two pull down flaps under the windscreen as they don't seem visible/obvious from any interior pictures that I've seen?

Yes I figured that, what I didn't quite figure out is the context i.e. if you're driving along on a summers day and think "My I fancy some cool air", other than winding the windows down are you talking having to pull over and pull the flaps down - is it all or nothing?

Sorry I'm sure this sounds very dumb but so be it..

Another important point, the lever for the flaps differs on the 300tdi which is a "sideways catch" design whereas Td5 has an "axial catch" design. Approximately 12 increments (maybe someone would like to count it during lunch) between fully open and fully closed, that perfect breeze is only a push away.. biggrin

That td5 is cheap, but many people dont like the td5 motor and it does get reflected in the price. As for the L reg, well it is advertised by a dealer, hence dealer prices. Over the top? Yes, but everyone has to make profits. Dont see that it proves your point anymore than 2 90's I looked at today, 1> R reg 300tdi purchased from a dealer £4k + vat and 2> H reg 2.5dt light accident damaged needs roof straightening and new windscreen/surround, asking price £500. Its all about age/condition and engine! Oh and being in the right place at the right time!

Sorry I worded that badly, I meant that for £4k both look pretty good VFM vs. loads at the same money that just look like sheds. It suggests, as people have mentioned, that either appearances can be deceptive or that some over value theirs.

Surely at that value you should be more concerned with the chassis condition. Most thing are quite cheap to sort on a landy but a badly rusted chassis may require a replacement = £2k (at least I suspect).

Also as I understand it, a more recent vehicle doesn’t mean a better condition. Something about a different steel being used during the ‘90’s. But I’m sure someone with a beard and a leather cowboy hat will be along in a bit to clarify.

My 4x4 toy is a 1987 90 with a V8, and the chassis is very solid. As the chap I bought it from said, they need to be kept clean underneath. Lumps of mud and crud hold the moisture, and haypresto the chassis ends up with severe corrosion problems.

Good luck with the search!

I may end up spending a little more anyway as the residuals seem so good. How can I word this, £4k isn't the most I could spend, hell I could get a new one, but if you're not careful you keep creeping up n up... on a "bit of fun" if that makes sense.

Anyway, I'm not too far from Liveridge 4x4 and John Craddock so I'll probably go look at the weekend, even if the vehicles are a bit dear for me it should give me chance to poke around in a "no pressure" environment.
