I've been looking for a Disco from around 98/99, but to my suprise found RRs at similar money so have broadened the search.

The biggest suprise is that the 4.6 seems to claim 20-21 mpg Vs the 4.0 at about 17-18, with a suggestion the diesels return around 25. This seems to make the 4.6 the logical choice, but is there anything I'm missing here?

Are these cars much more expensive to live with than Discos of the same vintage

Thanks

James

The short answer is yes a range rover will be more expensive to run, they will in general break down more frequently, the parts will cost more to buy and mpg wise you will be looking at around 12-15 mpg for a petrol with general driving and single figures when towing. A 1998 tdi disco will get about 30mpg with general driving.

300bhp/ton

While the p38a Range Rover shares much of the basic Land Rover design it is a far more complex beast than a Series 1 Discovery.

Also sadly I think your mpg figures are probably out. We've had two 4.6 HSE's. And ~15mpg is more the norm. In heavy town traffic with a heavy right foot I'd bet on more like 12mpg. That said on the motorway at a steady 65-70mph they would do 20-21mpg.

A 4.0 will offer very similar mpg. Although you may find you work one of these harder.

The diesel is ok, but sluggish by comparison and often suffer hot start problems.

Parts are likely to be a bit more expensive for the RR as it was the premium model. The air suspension can cause grief but usually when its not been looked after.

Do you want it for off roading?

As a road going 4x4 the p38a is a more comfortable, more refined better performing vehicle than a Discovery. The Disco is a bit more rugged and basic.

Off road the RR is still good, but it has a 108" wheelbase compared to the Disco's 100". So its size limits some of its ability.
