Mate's Range Rover gearbox failed yesteday. No drive in any gear. Car is about 4 years old with 70000 miles. Main dealer have just shrugged and said new replacement 'box, 4 grand please. No error codes apparently and they don't dismantle just replace. Is there any specialists in the Pickering Whitby of North Yorkshire area that would do more than just say gearbox replacement, four grand please?

TD6 ?

Quite a common problem...especially with chipped motors.

Gearbox mainshaft / transfer box end goes-- total rebuild--or new gearbox.

Ashcroft transmissions may help...get a garage to take out and send off for rebuild.

Cheers for the answer but I've just found out she has given the main dealer the go-ahead to order a new 'box. They said they could order it today and she could get her car back in a day or two if she said yes there and then.

Thanks again, anyway.

Hey mate.

I think this problem relates solely to the TD6 diesel which uses a different gearbox. I would do more research as I don't think it would affect a SC.

Perhaps someone on here with better knowledge than me on the subject could elaborate.

Change the transmission fluid and filter regularly (between 50k - 60k miles) and they'll last infinitely longer.

If its breaking hard-parts as described above - it wont make any difference.
