Hi Guys,

Some help please. A mate has recently bought the above and the battery died resulting in him not being able to start it. He has replaced the battery but the car just wont start. The doors unlock and the ignition turns on but the dash is saying CODE----. I am assuming this is some kind of lock out or such like. The fobs still unlock the doors so the batteries for them must be ok.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance cheers Ed

If he just changed the battery it'll need a stealer visit. Or someone with Rovercom ( or whatever it's currently named)

You need to maintain 12volt during a battery change with a booster pack.

Easy fix but lesson learned complex
beasties.

My E46 M3 did this just before christmas (same electronics?)once jumpstarted, the car would start & drive fine, but no rev counter, abs/dsc fuel gauge etc, just the word "code" where the mileage etc is normally displayed.

Dealers diagnosed a knackered cluster (would not comunicate with the diagnosic port to allow a recode) & fitted a new one plus a couple of days to recode. Nearly £1k all in.

Car is under BMW warranty, so no cost to me. Not sure if the warranty assisted their decision to replace rather than repair.

No you don't.

Have you tried resyncing the keys?

Details:
1) Get in and close all doors. Turn ignition on and off quickly and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds).

2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks.) Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.

3) Repeat for each key you want to initialize within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized (if you have more).

4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again to finalize.

Only following best advise.
If the chap had done that he wouldn't need to resync the system?

Further to the above, these are complex beasties indeed.

He towed it down to the local stealer and parked it there overnight.
The mechanic went out to have a look and guess what........

It started with the first turn of the key. Very bizarre. It seems to have totally reset also.
Fingers crossed it will be trouble free motoring from now on, thanks for the help folks.

cheers Ed
